The National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard issued a Freeze Watch Wednesday afternoon to be in effect in the Santa Clarita Valley from late Thursday night through Friday morning.

The temperature is expected to drop to between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit Thursday night into Friday morning.

Isolated locations could experience temperatures as low as 27, especially in the Ojai Valley.

The freeze watch also covers the San Luis Obispo County Central Coast, the Santa Barbara County Central Coast, the Santa Ynez Valley, the Ventura County Interior and Coastal Valleys, the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, the San Fernando Valley and the San Gabriel Valley.

Cities affected include San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Cambria, San Simeon, Santa Maria, Lompoc, Vandenberg, Solvang, Santa Ynez, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai, Piru, Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Newbury Park, Santa Clarita, Newhall, Valencia, Woodland Hills, Northridge, Burbank, Universal City,
Pasadena, San Gabriel and Pomona.

A freeze watch is called when temperatures between 29 and 32 degrees or less will be possible for at least two consecutive hours.

The freeze watch follows the Los Angeles County Department of Health’s extended cold weather alert, in effect through Friday.

Homeless individuals and families exposed to the elements are especially at risk.

The nonprofit Bridge to Home operates the emergency winter shelter in the Santa Clarita Valley and provides other services to homeless individuals and families. Protective measures to save outdoor plants may be needed.

Vulnerable animals and pets should be kept indoors in a house or barn.
