EL CAJON, Calif. – The Master’s College women’s basketball team closed out its regular season schedule with a commanding 73-58 victory over San Diego Christian Saturday night in El Cajon.
Saturday’s win brings the sixth-ranked Lady Mustangs’ overall record to 24-4, and 14-2 in GSAC play. Notably, TMC’s 14-2 GSAC record is its best conference finish in program history.
“We’ve been off for nine days, and I thought that showed a little, but we were able to string together multiple possessions in the second half where we got stops,” commented eighth-year TMC head coach Dan Waldeck. “Even when we haven’t shot well, we’ve found ways to win. It was our goal to finish the regular season on a high note, and I thought we accomplished that.”
Bianca Cubello (Riverside, CA) finished the evening with a double-double by leading all scorers with 20 points and grabbing an evening-high 17 rebounds.
“Bianca was great tonight with her 20 points and 17 rebounds,” said Waldeck. “That leadership showed in our team’s will.”
Nicole Nitake (Torrance, CA) joined Cubello in scoring double figures by posting 12 points while Olivia Thompson (Huntington, CA) was close behind with 11.
Collectively, TMC went 25-50 (50%) from the field, 8-20 (40%) behind the arc, and 15-20 (75%) from the charity stripe. The Lady Mustangs tallied 37 rebounds, 19 assists, 18 turnovers, and eight steals.
Due to TMC’s second-place finish in the GSAC, the Lady Mustangs earned a first round bye in the upcoming GSAC tournament. Next Saturday, the Lady Mustangs will take on the winner of the tournament’s first game featuring the third-seeded team and the sixth-seeded team. Opponents have yet to be determined.
“The postseason is always fun, and I’m so proud of what this team has accomplished thus far, and hopefully there’s lots more basketball to be played,” said Waldeck.
Tipoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. on the campus of Hope International University in Fullerton.
