1978 - Concert scene for "KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park" filmed at Magic Mountain [story]
KISS

Hello Friends!

We’ve been busy this month and we still have more activities to look forward to! Don’t forget to RSVP this week for our Fairy Breakfast and Auction happening this Saturday!  It’s a fun event for the whole family!  You can RSVP by going to our website and you can purchase your tickets in advance.  We hope to see you there!

Fairy Breakfast and Auction

On Saturday, May 2nd, we held a Building Party where families in the community came and built shelters for our shelter! We had a terrific turnout from the community! We would like to invite you to join us on Saturday, May 16th, for our Fairy Breakfast and Auction where you can enjoy a pancake breakfast and bid an a decorative fairy shelter made by one of the families in our community.  The event will take place in the Enchanted Gardens at Hart Park from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The cost is $25 per person to attend the event.  It’s a terrific event for the whole family!  We will have a face painter, Photo Touch Booth of SCV, Boy Scouts helping with fun activities for the kids, and of course, you can bid on the fairy shelters to take home to your own gardens!  All proceeds from the event go to support the Domestic Violence Center Shelter and Outreach Center.  Remember, Domestic Violence is NOT a Fairy Tale. For more information or to purchase your tickets online, you can go to our website: www.dvc-scv.org or see our Events Page on Facebook.

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes
On Saturday, May 9th, the Outlets at Tejon held a Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event and proceeds benefited the DVC!  There was a wonderful turn out!  We were so happy to see men and entire families participating in the event. It’s great to see the community come together because domestic violence is not just a woman’s issue, it’s a community issue.

Client Case Management

Each of our clients at the DVC is assigned a Case Manager who can help them with just about anything!  We can help them find affordable housing, apply for jobs, apply for school, get medical, dental, legal or immigration help and even help them find furniture, beds, refrigerators, and other items for their homes. Most of our Case Managers are also bilingual so if a client speaks only Spanish, our Case Managers are still able to assist.  “We try to empower our clients so they learn to do things on their own and that way, they can teach their children,” says Christy, one of our bilingual Case Managers.  She also stated that one of our clients was recently accepted into the Nursing program at College of the Canyons, and we were able to assist her with that application process!  “It’s so fulfilling to see someone who’s gone through such hard times get back on her feet, regain her self-esteem and walk away with a smile on her face. I love to hear a client say that she wants a better life for her children and she’s going to make it happen,” says Christy.
If you are in need of assistance you can contact our office to make an appointment at 661-259-8175.  Most of our staff is bilingual in Spanish and English, so you can request to meet with a staff member that speaks either language.
Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and with mental health, often comes the topic of suicide.  If you, or someone you know has contemplated suicide, you should talk to a professional.
This year, College of the Canyons placed 1,100 lanterns representing the 1,100 college students who have taken their own lives across college campuses. You have options, suicide doesn’t have to be one of them.
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers a 24/7 hotline.  You can call someone at anytime at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).  Or you can visit their website for more information  http://www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/

Boy Scouts help the DVC!
Braxton, from Boy Scout Troop #58, decided to build 106 bird houses to be used as Fairy Shelters for the Domestic Violence Center’s Fairy Shelter events!  Braxton chose to do this for the DVC as his Eagle Scout project because he says, “Domestic Violence is an important issue for me and I felt like I could do my part to help spread awareness”.   Braxton organized his Troop #58 and his brother’s Troop #48, together and in one weekend they were able to build all 106 houses!  Thank you so much Braxton and Troops #58 and #48 for helping the DVC! Fairy Shelters will be auctioned off at our Fairy Breakfast and Auction on May 16th!

Therapy Sessions
Did you know the DVC offers therapy sessions?  We offer both group and individual sessions. Group sessions are free after an annual registration fee is paid and individual sessions are only $5 per session. We have Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) interns that run the sessions.  One of our newest MFT’s is Elise.  We asked Elise how the sessions work and what she likes best about working with our clients.  Here’s what she had to say. “With my clients, I like to keep in mind the topics they are discussing if they attend group, but mainly I listen for the coping skills they have developed over the years and discuss whether they are still healthy or if they are ones they would like to change. My job is to empower our clients to see the other options available and to try new ways to deal with their struggles. The Domestic Violence Center provides individual therapy because it is a necessary part of healing from trauma, but the process is incredibly difficult.  It takes a certain amount of initiative from our clients to begin the work, and therapy often makes things feel worse before they can get better, but it is the start of a more empowered chapter in their lives. The greatest moment of success is when a client comes in with a big beautiful smile to say: “I did it,” and suddenly all the things that have been wrestled with in session coalesce in one landmark action.”
If you are interested in attending group or individual therapy sessions, please contact our office at 661-259-8175 for more information.
