boe-notifies-local-retailers-of-upcomingIf you earned a certain amount of money in 2015, the federal government may owe you money.

If you earned less than $53,267 in 2015, the federal government may owe you up to $6,242; and if you earned less than $13,870, the State of California may owe you an additional amount of up to $2,653.

Learn more about your eligibility for this money and how to claim it by attending one of Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome Horton’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Mega Days (also known as the Free Income Tax Preparation and Family Resource Fair events) hosted by the Internal Revenue Service, Franchise Tax Board, Board of Equalization, local colleges, and elected officials throughout tax season. To register, call 1-866-910-9559. To find other VITA locations, visit www.boe.ca.gov/vita.

The VITA Mega Day schedule will begin on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at California State University, Dominguez Hills. This will be the first of at least 17 Mega events that will feature free all-day tax preparation in addition to workforce and family services.

Attendees will receive tax preparation assistance and information about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Individuals who are eligible can qualify for as much as $6,242 in federal EITC, and as much as $2,653 in the new California EITC. Family services that will be available include financial literacy training, job preparation assistance, food and nutrition services, low-cost and free medical services, and health screenings.

BOE’s VITA program will also include tax preparation services at BOE district offices. Beginning January 25, 2016, free tax assistance will be offered in West Covina (Mondays), Culver City (Tuesdays), Norwalk (Wednesdays) and Glendale (Fridays) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Through the BOE’s partnership with the United Way, assistance will also be offered at various offices throughout Ventura County.

Taxpayers should bring proof of identification including social security cards, wage and earning statement(s) from employers, interest and dividend statements from banks, bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit, and a copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available.

All workforce and family services will be free and open to the public. Language assistance will be available in English, Spanish and Mandarin.

  1. Chuchies Sandoval do you know anything about this

  2. In addition to the California State University, Dominguez Hills campus, California State University, Northridge offers the same program (CSUN VITA). They also have locations located convenient for Santa Clarita residents.

  3. The wording on this is horrifying. They are OWED that money? Owed? As in…they lent the money and it’s being repaid? No.

This money being taken from other tax payers and GIVEN.

  4. Abigail says:

Given is correct. Ask yourself – when someone has not worked all year or barely worked and they brag about a tax refund of $8,000. Where do you think that money came from? Hard working tax paying people. This is clearly redistribution and is bull. It is a handout from some hardworking person’s pocket to another person who simply didn’t work hard. Not owed – given! Why do I have to give my hard earned money to someone who sat on the couch all year watching TV? I don’t even know this person I am in essence paying, yet they get my money for nothing and it is labeled OWED. That is totally messed up.

  5. Is this news or an advertisement?

  6. Just because someone made less than 50k doesn’t mean they sat on their behind all year long and they are taking money from other tax payers. Almost half of my check is taken from the government and for insurance (which doubled for 2016). So I would have made over 50k but almost half of my income was taken from me and that goes to the people who sit on their couches and collect. Imagine that?! ???

    • Abigail says:

Brittany – you are clearly a hard working person who has paid into the system. If you are responding to my comment please read it again. You are not the person/people I am talking about. It is the people who had NOT worked if at all and have NOT paid into the system and yet take and take from people like you and me who do and pay dearly as you describe. It is redistribution. You deserve your money back, but many of us don’t get it because we make over the 50K mark (and pay for our own insurance) and the money taken from us is redistributed. If a person did not pay in they are simply taking it from someone who did. The money did not just magically appear. It had to come from somewhere. Yes, I have seen people sitting on their couches watching TV and collecting off of hard working people like you and me.

  7. Dave Sanders says:

It’s about Earned Income Credit. And only applied to people with Minor Children. I never made 50K a year and when the kids were little, hell yeah, I took the credit. This is not some Freebie like Welfare.
