VISALIA – Ty Culbreth was dominant to start his outing, but the Visalia Rawhide put up four runs with two outs in the fourth inning and went on to beat the JetHawks, 9-4, on Sunday evening at Recreation Park.
The JetHawks (17-14, 50-51) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Colton Welker RBI-single in the third inning in support of Culbreth (5-4). The left-hander retired the side in order in the third and struck out the first two batters of the fourth inning to set down the first 11 batters of the game before trouble struck.
Marcus Wilson started the Rawhide (13-18, 50-51) rally with two out in the fourth on an infield single. The next two batters singled to tie the game before a walk loaded the bases for Jason Morozowski. The left fielder cleared the bases with a double off the centerfield wall to put Visalia up, 4-1.
The Rawhide knocked Culbreth out of the game with a two-run Drew Ellis home run in the sixth inning. Culbreth allowed six runs on six hits over 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts and a walk. The loss was his first since June 2.
Visalia added two runs in the seventh on back-to-back home runs from Luis Alejandro Basabe and Stephen Smith against reliever Kenny Oakley.
Vince Fernandez hit a two-run home run in the eighth to inning to add to Lancaster’s tally. It was his 14th of the season.
Connor Grey (8-6) allowed one run over six innings to pick up his league-leading eighth win.
Here’s the box score.
The series concludes with a rubber game on Monday. Logan Longwith (1-4) starts for the JetHawks against Cole Stapler (0-2). First pitch is 11 a.m.
