1938 - Supervisors award construction contract for jail at Wayside Farms in Castaic (later called Pitchess Detention Center) [story]
Wayside

crimezone7[KHTS] – Residents around Santa Clarita have recently reported suspicious solicitors frequenting their neighborhoods and local law enforcement is advising people to be vigilant when dealing with people who are going door-to-door.

There are certain precautions that can be taken in order to verify the legitimacy of the organization that a solicitor represents and it is advisable to do research on any organization that you are considering donating money to and always ask for a receipt if you donate.

“The number one thing you can do is resist any pressure to give money on the spot,” said Shirley Miller, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station public information officer. “You can always think about it and feel free to ask questions. Ask them about the name of the charity, where they are located and what the money will be spent on.”

Through the state of California Office of the Attorney General, a webpage has been created that allows concerned would-be donors to check the validity of a charity or nonprofit organization.

Since soliciting is not illegal but does require a permit, the link allows the user to check the legitimacy of a certain charity and also provides an opportunity to complain if a solicitor is rude or acts aggressively.

“If solicitors show suspicious behavior, if they are aggressive, if they are confrontational, that’s something you should report to the sheriff’ station,” said Miller.

A strong neighborhood watch can help keep your neighborhood safe and also assist local law enforcement solve crimes.

“If someone in your neighborhood is acting suspiciously, get a description of the person, a vehicle description and a license plate number if it is safe to do so,” said Miller. “Be aware and be cautious.”

Had a guy come to my door a couple of nights ago ring my doorbell. It was after dark, so I turned on porch light to see who it was. I didn’t open the door, but tapped on the sidelight glass next to the door where the no solicitor sign was, and he yelled out that he spoke with my neighbor who said it was okay to knock. I just told him to go away and turned off my porch light. Checked with my neighbors, nobody said anything to him.

  15. Had several break ins at Vista Del Canon over by Costco.Gated community doesn’t stop them. They wait for people to leave for work then knock to see if anyone is left inside and they are in and out in 5 min.We have an alarm and no downstairs windows to get into but they were going through the garage doors. If they want in they get in.

    • Linda Garcia says:

Yes Kelly. This summer at VDC apparently they were using children to knock on doors and do the actual break-ins and robberies. So sad.

    • That was happening in my friends neighborhood in East Highland near San Bernardino. They were hopping fences after soliciting then finding out work patterns and shattering sliding glass doors to do smash and grabs. It was happening all over and in Rancho Cucamonga. Someone actually walked into my stepdaughters house and stole her moms purse right of the counter while her brother was sitting there doing homework. Crazy!!!!

    • Scary that’s why we should b armed u come in my house suffer the consequences

  16. Missionaries from the Morman church are not pushy .They are polite and take no the first time. They do not even ask to leave literature most of the time.It is the Jehovah Witnesses that just do not stop…everyday of the week.I have to be rude to just shut the door after being as nice as possible. And I am sorry but a good portion of them do not speak English well so that’s an issue also.

  17. They come to the door soliciting to case your house. If you don’t answer they come back and break in. Fact.

  18. Silvie Faust says:

There is a man and woman walking around right now

  19. I get 4-6 calls a day. Same numbers over and over. At the door, solar salesmen and women.very pushy! No problem with Mormons tho. Always well dressed and polite.

Had someone come to my door around 7:30 pm. Did not answer. Scary since I live alone.

  22. Jeannie Dyke says:

Same here in Bellflower and Downey.

  23. Omg, last week I answered my front door and it was a man dressed in Edison uniform shirt with a clipboard in hand. Asked me if he can look at our bill. I told him my husband pays the bills and most the time he does it electronically. I told him my husband is sleeping due to working graveyard. If you come back later he should be awake he confirmed he was coming back but never came back…… pretty creepy!

  24. Has anyone in the Saugus area had some older guy come to your door with a binder saying he’s a vet and that he’s raising money for his for a veterans program? He spoke super fast, flipped through all these pages in this binder and said something about his niece being overseas in the service. I told him I gave through other outlets and he was almost persistent. The dog was enough to scare him away and he finally checked something off in his binder and left.

  25. Someone rang my doorbell after dark last night in Westcreek, Valencia. I didn’t answer.

  26. Susan Maddux says:

We have had two different men come a few days apart soliciting Solar company. They had no info or business cards, only shirts with a logo. Hmmm!

  27. Travis Marg says:

I bet you the citizens of Texas doesn’t get door-to-door solicitors when they know that most home owners have a gun on them I see so many post here and I bet if this was a Carry state you would see more than half of these post just disappear that’s just my opinion

  28. Caesar King says:

Neighborhood watch and video surveillance works!

  29. Adriana Gomez Siobhan Anthony

  30. I just don’t understand why anyone answers their doors day or night..if they are not expecting anyone? I’ll look out the peep hole just to make sure. Nowadays with what going on, I’ll yell through the closed door, in a gruff voice that I’m busy with my family. I raised my kids that way too…don’t open the door, period.

  31. Uh I have an extremely effective way of dealing with solicitors…I don’t answer the door! ?

  32. Be careful folks. Don’t take chances.

  33. Jay Salt says:

My dog will bite their nuts off if there gonna try something fast

  34. Make a sign like mine. “We found God, we love our vacuum, we gave at the office, solar panels are ugly. Have a nice day!” And don’t answer your door.

  35. Devon Pierce says:

Does this mean I need to turn over the girl scouts to the police?

  39. Speaking on my behalf. Since I’m a door to door salesperson. And I’m 16 years old. I can promise you guys there is no danger at all. It’s just jobs for highschool students. Well my job is. And it something pretty cool. Just keeps us busy. And I’ve been doing this for 3 years now. And I’ve never had a problem with neighbors questioning me and stuff.

  40. Loretta Guth says:

just slam the door in their face like everybody else does!
