Defending champion Elisa Pierre, a junior from Golden Valley, defended her title in the Newhall Cup Wednesday by one stroke over Ashley Mayhall of West Ranch.
The final round of the 9th Annual Newhall Cup for girls Foothill League golf was finished Wednesday at TPC Valencia with plenty of drama.
To no one’s surprise, the West Ranch Wildcats secured not only the cup but also the league championship. In the 2-round, 18-hole Newhall Cup, the Wildcats shot a 426, 49 strokes better than second place Valencia. Golden Valley finished third followed by Canyon, Saugus and Hart.
The Newhall Cup win helped secure an easy league championship for the Wildcats, but it was the Grizzlies grabbing second overall, followed by Valencia, Canyon, Saugus and Hart.
The individual champion of the Newhall Cup went to Golden Valley’s Elisa Pierre for the second year in a row. The junior shot a 27-hole total of 4-over 112 to win by one stroke over Ashley Mayhall of West Ranch.
Pierre was also medalist in the league with a season total of 182, followed by Mayhall, her Wildcat teammate Mackenzie Bailey placed third, Valencia’s Eunice Song was fourth, Wildcat Kate Caffery fifth and Golden Valley’s Justine Roblendo sixth. Those six will now go on to CIF competition representing the Foothill League.
Last year Elisa Pierre was able to make it through CIF Southern Section competition to play in the state championship.
