[KHTS] – Santa Clarita Valley Assemblyman Scott Wilk was named one of seven “California Co-Chairs” for Florida State Senator Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign on Friday.

“The Rubio campaign was looking for well known leaders to serve as ambassadors of goodwill,” Wilk said. “I was honored to be named as one of the seven co-chairs.”

In addition to Wilk, the co-chairs include San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, State Senators Jim Nielson of Gerber and Jeff Stone of Temecula, Andy Vidak of Hanford, Pat Bates of Laguna Niguel and Assemblywoman Kristen Olsen of Modesto.

“If Marco hasn’t secured the nomination by June, it’s good to know that we have a strong organization of conservatives in California,” Caitlin Conant, spokesperson for Rubio, said in a statement. “Marco is competing in all 50 states because he is uniquely able to unite Republicans and inspire the nation.”

The seven California co-chairs who were chosen internally by the Rubio campaign, are tasked with garnering support and helping to raise campaign funds.

“His vision for a ‘New American Century,’ for a smart and strong national defense, and his plans to create good paying jobs for all Americans is what our country needs,” said Wilk in a statement.

Wilk and other co-chairs have compared Rubio to former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

“Senator Rubio has conservative values and articulates them in a positive and uplifting way,” Wilk said. “A lot like Ronald Reagan did in his 1980 campaign.”

Donald Trump currently leads the field of GOP candidates with 39 percent of Republican and Republican leaning pollsters choosing him, according to the most recent CNN/ORC poll.

Trailing behind Trump is Texas Senator Ted Cruz with 18 percent of the vote, according to the same poll.

The Iowa caucuses are due to take place on Feb. 1, and the California primary on June 5.
