The company that builds the animal enclosures at Tippi Hedren’s Shambala Preserve in Acton has replicated the jungle gym from the 1963 Hitchcock film that made the actress famous – and set her on a path to self-sufficiency that has enabled her to rescue lions, tigers and other “big cats” from abusive owners and environments.
“I wanted a tribute to ‘The Birds’ to exist on the Shambala Preserve because without that film, I would not be doing the work with rescuing big cats born in the U.S. to be sold as pets or for financial gain, Hedren said in a statement.
There’s a scene in the film “where I sit on the bench waiting for that incessant song to end,” Hedren said. Ravens then flock to the jungle gym and attack her.
Persons 18 and older may visit Shambala by reservation only. To sign up for a tour, click here.
Now, “you can sit on the bench, have your photo taken with the jungle gym behind you, with a few birds sitting on it, just like I did in the film,” Hedren said.
The jungle gym was designed, fabricated and donated by Harris Steel Fence, which builds all of Shambala’s animal compounds.

Bill and I volunteered at Shambala for a short time. She is a doll, but her head volunteer assistants are ugly people–and not in a visual way. Shmoe, she is trying to get those canned hunts abolished. You know, the ones throughout the midwest and Texas in particular, where someone thought it would be cute to have a lion cub as a pet, a year or so later it was dumped into some huge pasture in Texas that was fenced in and some “hunter” killed it. Poor guys, never had a chance. That is what her ROAR foundation is about.
We live a half mile from a big cat sanctuary… Over 300 of them… It’s great for property values… Raising children in this area will definitely make a parent nervous… Unless you live close enough to one of these places and hear them roar constantly…well…HUSH… I’m over saving them and more for getting them back to their NATURAL habit… Putting them in cages and letting them live an existence like that is humane…? Well… I think that’s screwed up…
Yeah, but unfortunately none of those cats are releasable, many were born in captivity and have been in a cage their entire life. Shambala has many huge enclosures and a system to rotate the cats into different areas of the property safely, so they have new things to see and smell. It is making the best of a bad scene. She has never had an escape in all these years.
I don’t mean any disrespect, its just we’ve had enough… I think what y’all do is great…just keep the damn things out of East TN…heh heh..
I know, unfortunately I think it is legal to have big cats as pets in TN, hence the ultimate need for a sanctuary. Other than roars, have you had issues with this place?
I have walked the compound, met and interviewed Tippi, she has a “one way” to saving animals left to walk the streets when found. She is amazing, vibrant, very cool and a friend. Please do not talk about her until you get to know her. Unless it is all the good she has brought to the Sanctuary for Animals taken out of the wild. I was 3 feet from them and saw them so close, although she knows the risks and still has compassion.
Ginger, the conversation moved on to a sanctuary close to Shmoe in TN. Read further down this string to see what I had to say about Tippi. They were not disparaging in the least!
Not really… Just the.stench when the wind is right, semi trucks taking out signs and guard rails on these roads that aren’t zoned for them and the people that take care of these animals don’t seem to have much training…
Then that certainly is bad news. I wouldn’t want to put up with that either. I am real good at complaining to the proper authorities.
This is Roane County…money talks here…
