Supporters of the SCV Senior Center who take part in this year’s Celebrity Waiter event will be helping to support a variety of desperately needed services which the center provides to seniors in the Santa Clarita Valley. This year’s event, “Celebrating Cities of the World,” is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Hyatt Regency Valencia.
One of the critical services supported by fundraising events such as the Celebrity Waiter dinner is the Home Delivered Meals program, which delivers hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors five days a week. The program serves nearly 300 clients every day, but it offers much more than meals.
One client had fallen and, although he wasn’t injured, he was calmed by the fact that he knew his meal would arrive around 11:30 every day, so he wouldn’t have long to wait for help. The driver helped him call for assistance and stayed with him until help arrived. Drivers also perform such minor, but necessary, tasks as replacing light bulbs, unscrewing stubborn caps on medications or other bottles, and notifying the center’s Supportive Services Department if a recipient doesn’t respond to doorbell or phone for several days.
The meal itself made a tremendous difference to one family of three elderly relatives living on a fixed income that often didn’t go far enough to provide fresh food. That family also received help to locate affordable in-home care, low-cost transportation services and reduced utility fees.
The Senior Center’s Handyworker Program has built ramps for wheelchair users and completed needed repairs that senior homeowners could not afford. The Adult Day Care program offers not only a respite for caregivers, but also helps improve morale of seniors, who enjoy the social outlets and mental stimulation provided by the program.
Celebrity Waiter guests and volunteer waiters not only support such critical Senior Center programs, but they have a lot of fun doing it! Table sponsors get to unleash their creative side and have some fun decorating their table and having their guests dress the part as well. In addition to the waiters’ antics at each table, live entertainment, both live and silent auctions and music and dancing will round out the evening.
Premium tables are available now. Table sponsorships are available at levels ranging from $1,650 to $5,500. Individual tickets are $125. Further information and table sponsorship reservations can be obtained by calling Jennifer at (661) 259-9444, extension144.
