PUBLIC SAFETY TIP OF THE WEEK: Jaywalking
Sadly, Santa Clarita saw its share of vehicle vs. pedestrian accidents this summer, some of which were fatal. In these incidents, the victims were less than 100 feet from a designated crosswalk with signals. Stevenson Ranch has many high-traffic roads, like The Old Road, Pico Canyon Road, and Stevenson Ranch Parkway. These streets are high speed, and have a lot of hills and curves which make it difficult for drivers to see a small, slow moving person or animal in the roadway. BE SAFE! Take the time to walk to a designated crosswalk, and only cross when the signals tell you to do so. The law states that “the pedestrian always has the right-of-way”, however a written law cannot stop a two ton vehicle moving at 50 mph if they don’t see you.
