The board of directors of the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund is thrilled to announce that they opened funding on Monday July 14.

Each year the Fight It. Races host more than 300 runners at Santa Clarita Valley’s Central Park and raises more than $20,000 to ease the financial burden of young adults, ages 18-40, during their fight with cancer.

Due to the success of the 2014 race and with the help of top sponsors, Whitening Lightening and Gymnastics Unlimited along with top fundraisers, Ella Thompson and Kieran Wong, the fund raised more than $40,000 and will be able to assist more than 50 young adults during their fight with cancer in 2014.

This is almost 30 percent more than last year.

The Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund supports patients ages 18-40 as they undergo cancer treatment.  This fund provides services to meet daily needs that are not covered by insurance. Typical grants cover $500 worth of medical co-payments, transportation, rents or mortgages, repairs and groceries.

In early 2003, the BMCF incorporated as a California non-profit.  Later that same year it became a Federal 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Since it was founded by Brenda in 2001, the Fund has provided more than $280,000 in services for more than 400 young adults across 30 different states.  She built it specifically for young adults her age to maintain self-respect during the months of treatment and minimize the financial stresses that are associated with this trying time.

In February 2004, Brenda lost her second battle against cancer.  However, the BMCF continues to realize her vision of a nationwide support organization that helps young adults fight cancer.
