CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. – For the second consecutive year, The Master’s College golf team has been named conference champions after carding a collective score of 904 (300-302-302) at the 2016 Golden State Athletic Conference Championship on the greens of the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.
“We are thrilled to win the Conference Championship,” commented head coach Jason Semelsberger. “To have the opportunity to do it in back-to-back years is a joy. We praise the Lord and give Him the credit. The players made sound decisions throughout the tournament on a demanding golf course in difficult conditions which led to our first victory of the season.”
TMC’s Blake McPherson took home the individual title as the junior transfer finished the two-day tournament with a final score of six-over 222 (74-75-73).
“I am so excited and happy for Blake,” said Semelsberger. “This is a neat time for him to break through after struggling with his game during the last few events. He has worked hard on the right things and the Lord have him the victory.”
Close behind was teamate Joey Downey who shot a 226 (75-74-77) and finished third overall, while Josh Delo tied for fifth place after carding a 230 (77-77-76). Samuel Eisenhuth finished in eighth overall at 231(79-76-76). Daniel Kim tied for 15th after shooting a collective score of 239 (74-81-84).
The 19th-ranked Mustangs beat No. 13 Arizona Christian by twelve strokes as the Firestorm finished the tournament with a score of 916 (306-303-307). Receiving-votes William Jessup placed third overall at 924 (309-316-299), Biola University followed in fourth place at 957 (321-327-309), tournament host Hope International finished sixth overall at (999), while Menlo College rounded things out by carding a 1,018 (337-356-325).
Tuesday’s victory -TMC’s first tournament win all season- caps off the Mustangs’ regular-season schedule where they were only outscored once by a GSAC opponent.
The Mustangs’ victory punches their ticket to the 65th Annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships from May 24-27 on the greens of TPC Deer Run in Moline, Ill.
