The West Ranch baseball team needed extra innings, but beat El Camino Real 4-3 in a game at USC’s Dedeaux Field.
West Ranch scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie.
Josh Heinz drove in a run and had two hits. JC Cloney pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Canyon softball team rode the arm and bat of Hayley Bottino to a shutout over Oxnard. Bottino hit a three-run home run and pitched a five-hitter in a 4-0 win over Oxnard.
Courtney Ziese added a solo homer for Canyon.
The Valencia boys tennis team won the California Classic tournament in Clovis over the weekend, downing Palo Alto in the championship match.
Valencia and Palo Alto tied, 3-3, in the final match, but the Vikings won on games, 54-52. It was the second California Classic championship in the past three years for Valencia.
Valencia’s JR Macalutas and Joey Fernicola were selected as co-MVPs of the tournament.
The Vikings continued to roll with a 16-2 win over Crescenta Valley on Monday.
The Saugus boys tennis team beat Quartz Hill, 72-66, on games.
In high school golf, Saugus beat Santa Monica by 16 strokes, 391-407, at Brentwood Country Club.
The West Ranch boys golf team lost to Santa Barbara by eight strokes, 395-403, at the Rancho San Marcos Golf Course.
In baseball, Hart High graduate Trevor Bauer made his preseason debut for the Diamondbacks and pitched two scoreless innings against the Rockies.
Bauer retired all six batters he faced and struck out two. He was the third overall pick in last year’s baseball draft and the first-round selection for the Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers beat the White Sox, 6-4, in a preseason game in Glendale, Ariz.
Scott Van Slyke hit a two-run home run for the Dodgers in a five-run sixth inning.
In hockey, the Kings are in Nashville for a game against the Predators tonight. The revamped Kings have won two games in a row and three of their past four.
They are coming off a 4-2 win over the Ducks on Saturday night. Newly acquired Jeff Carter scored his first two goals as a King against the Ducks.
