The USA men’s volleyball team beat top-ranked Brazil in four games in group play at the Summer Olympics in London.

Team USA, with Saugus High graduate David Smith, extended its Olympic win streak to 11 matches, going back to the 2008 Summer Games when the United States won the gold medal.

Team USA has won its first three matches in the London Games. Against Brazil, captain Clay Stanley recorded 19 points to lead Team USA.

In swimming, Hart High graduate Anthony Ervin is in the finals of the 50 meter freestyle. He qualified fourth in 21.83 seconds.

George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago is the fastest qualifier in the 50 freestyle in 21.77 seconds.

Ervin won a gold medal in the 50 freestyle in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia.

The 50 freestyle final is today at noon.

In track and field, Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix races for the first time in the Summer Olympics today. The first round of the 100 meters start this morning.

The 100 meters is one of three events at the Olympics for Felix. She will also be competing in the 200 and the 4×100 relay.

The United States men’s basketball team put a whooping on Nigeria. Team USA set the Olympic record for most points in a game, beating Nigeria, 156-73. Carmelo Anthony set an Olympic record scoring 37 points and was 10 of 12 on 3-pointers.

The United States set team Olympic records in 3-pointers with 26, field goals with 59 and field-goal percentage with 71 percent.

The 83-point margin of victory was also the most in United States Olympic history.

In baseball, the new-look Dodgers start a three-game weekend series with the Chicago Cubs tonight at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers have lost three games in a row and are a half-game behind the San Francisco Giants in the National League West standings.

Chad Billingsley is scheduled to start for the Dodgers against Jeff Samardzija for the Cubs.
