Building a home recording studio is a dream for many audio enthusiasts. With all the tools available, it’s feasible to build one in a bedroom or other space in your own home, but many people don’t know where to start. The panelists for this New Heights session will share with you all of the basic aspects of setting up your studio. They will discuss the equipment you will need and provide thoughts on a budget to keep in mind for the project. Panelists include Jim Jeffrey (composer, singer/songwriter, educator and music producer), Steven Leavitt (music producer, musician and audio engineer) and Thomas Brewer (re-recording mixer and 23-year veteran in the film, television and gaming industries).

On May 4th, the public is invited to experience the Digital Arts Expo’s exhibitions and concerts on the CalArts’ campus featuring creatively adventurous and technologically imaginative new work from across all disciplines of the Institute.

Reflecting California Institute of the Arts’ experimental ethos, the Institute’s Digital Arts Expo rolls out its latest projects integrating cutting-edge engineering and computer science with visual and performing arts. Highlighting new student and faculty projects made over this last academic year, the DAE’s exhibitions and performances run from early afternoon to late evening in the ROD Music Hall, MOD Theater, Main Gallery, Wild Beast, Machine Lab, and Lund Dance Theater. The DAE reflects the latest practices in technologically sophisticated arts, involving viewers in interactive experiences, bringing artists’ perspectives to computer games, forecasting future directions of digital performance, animation, and projection mapping, and exploring the latest in software and hardware as a means of commenting on our increasingly connected world.

May 4, 2017: JAM Session & Concert – Salsa Dance at Old Town Newhall Library

Dance to the beat, play an instrument, and experience something unexpected with JAM Sessions, fun, interactive music and dance events hosted in conjunction with the Ford Theatre Foundation. The evening integrates live dance instruction from professional instructors with live band performances.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring a chair if you just plan on listening to the music. JAM Sessions are participatory and centered around movement and music. All JAMs are FREE, and all ages and skill levels are welcome.

This month’s theme is Salsa Dance.

Dance the Rueda de Casino! Urban Latin dance theatre company CONTRA-TIEMPO will lead an exploration of this fun social dance, a Cuban form of salsa danced in a circle. Leave inspired, engaged and better at communicating through movement! Live music from Orquesta Charangoa, who perform authentic Cuban music in the Charanga style, and have performed at the Watts Towers Jazz Festival, the L.A. Salsa Festival, the L.A. Cuban Festival, and more.

West Ranch High School Theatre Department presents Peter and the Star Catcher, a wildly theatrical prequel to Peter Pan based on the children’s book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Adapted for the stage by Rick Elice.

Starcatcher apprentice Molly Aster and three orphans are hunted by cut-throat pirates and their mustachioed captain as she races to protect a trunk of magical “Starstuff.” From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair…and the bonds of friendship, duty and love.
