If you live in Canyon Country, you might want to make sure your dogs, cats and young children don’t get out of the house unless you’ve got them on a leash.
Elaine Gawlik of All Creatures Emergency Center in Newhall said an unusually large number of small animals were brought into the after-hours clinic Friday morning after being attacked by a coyote.
All of the attacks occurred in the Whites Canyon area of Canyon Country, she said. One family brought in three dogs that had been bitten; they survived. Another pet owner brought in a cat that did not survive. Efforts to re-contact the clinician for details on the animals and the times of the attacks were unsuccessful.
Sgt. Lisa Eldridge of Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control in Castaic said she hadn’t heard of any attacks being reported Friday, but said it wouldn’t surprise her.
“Coyotes go through our communities looking for pets,” Eldridge said. “They’re able to scale fences.”

A neighborhood cat in Santa Monica (not a stray) was attacked and eaten by coyotes last night. His remains were scattered all over the lawn. He was a gorgeous cat, and I heard him scream in terror at about 3 am. I didn’t know what had happened; I thought bunch of cats had gotten into a fight. Not so. Now I’m scared. I have two small dogs, and I walk them frequently. Any suggestions? I’ve been reading everywhere that Coyotes do attack during the day as well. This happened at around 25th street and Wilshire.
