Sheriff Statement

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station received a call Thursday at approximately 11:15pm when a resident heard a burglar inside his home (Hot Prowl Burglary) in a residential area near Sand Canyon Road and Lost Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

The resident, who is a Reserve Police Officer for the Baldwin Park Police Department, was at his home with his wife and children.

He heard a loud crash and when he went to investigate, he saw his rear sliding glass door to his residence was smashed open and the suspect was standing inside his kitchen.

The victim quickly retrieved his handgun and ordered the suspect to stop and lay down. He said the suspect hesitated, then moved possibly toward the victim. The victim fired his gun at the suspect and the suspect ran out through the sliding door and out of sight.

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies surrounded the area (set up a containment). A Sheriff’s Department patrol helicopter and deputies from Palmdale Sheriff’s Station responded and assisted with the containment and search for the suspect. Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Detectives also responded to the scene and are handling the criminal investigation.

The victim discovered that two purses and their contents had been taken from the kitchen area. A large, baseball size rock was found inside near the smashed sliding door.

The suspect has not been identified at this time and it is not known if he was hit by the shot that was fired.

The suspect is described as a male, 15 – 20 years old, approximately 5 foot 7, weighing approximately 150 pounds.

If you have any information regarding this incident please contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121. Further information will be released as it becomes available.

Although we all know the victim was armed (due to the article), I’m certain the criminal did not. Who knows what might have happened if the victim was not armed! This is ANOTHER reason why responsible gun ownership must NOT be infringed upon by the gun grabbers in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. We need to be able to defend ourselves when the time arises – and not be told what kind of guns we can do it with or how many cartridges our magazines can hold…..
