Newhall County Water District officials are looking to move their governing board elections from odd to even years, beginning with the 2017 board election.
Currently, NCWD board elections are held every two years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of odd years, according to a report.
The report cites several reasons for the move, including Senate Bill 415, which was approved in September 2015 and does not allow “a political subdivision from an holding an election other than on a statewide election date beginning January 2018;” the Saugus Union school District, Sulphur Springs School District, Santa Clarita Community College District and city of Santa Clarita moved to even years; and voter participation is expected to be greater for statewide elections than for local elections, according to the report.
If approved by the county, the current NCWD Board of Directors members election dates would be pushed back a year.
B.J. Atkins, Kathy Colley and Maria Gutzeit would have been up for election in 2017 but, if the move is approved, would be up for election in 2018. Daniel Mortensen and Lynne Plambeck would have been up for election in 2019 and would be moved to 2020.

Why?
Probably so they won’t get sued by that Mayor attorney of Lancaster (Rex Parris) that is doing all the voter rights lawsuits. By the way – he endorsed Barger, Mike Antonovich’s hand picked successor. Guess she supports that kind of thing. She seems glad to have his endorsement.
Is this going to lower our water rates?
ha ha ha
They ought to have all local elections in the odd year. Those really interested and knowledgeable will vote. A huge voter turnout will only boost the incumbents’ chances as ignorant voters will go with those already in office.
