Rains this week are potentially threatening Sand Fire burn areas with mudslides and flooding.
The Sand Fire scorched over 40,000 acres near Sand Canyon this summer. And the recent rain puts this area at risk again.
“After a fire, there is a layer of film on the top of the soil,” said Inspector Gustavo Medina of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. “When it rains, the water builds up and mud slides down the hill.”
There have been no reports of mudslides or flooding, Medina said.
“So far ‘Mother Nature’ has been kind,” said Ruthann Levison, director of communications for the Sand Canyon Homeowners Association. “A few of us are dealing with problematic mud issues, but no homes have been impacted dangerously. I hope this present trend continues throughout the rainy season.
