1887 - Town of Saugus founded; Castaic train station (passenger shelter) opens [story]
Saugus

Original post as of 10:05 a.m.:
An investigation is underway as to the cause of a fiery fatal two-car crash that killed one person in Saugus early Tuesday morning.

The call came in at approximately 6:51 a.m. of a crash that occurred on San Francisquito Canyon Road, approximately seven miles north of Copper Hill, said Officer Priessman of the California Highway Patrol.

“Two minutes after fire came on the scene, they confirmed one vehicle was overturned and one vehicle was on fire,” Priessman said. “It occurred in a very poor coverage area so we have very little information on it as far as radio traffic or cell phone, so we can’t get a lot of information.”

At 7:15 a.m., one person was declared dead at the scene and one person was transported via ambulance. However, no word yet as to where that person was transported, Priessman said.

Update as of 6:30 p.m.:
In a police report released later in the day, the deceased was described as “John Doe” from Lancaster. The other victim is Amy Porter from Santa Clarita.

According to the police report, John Doe was driving his 2006 Kia Rio southbound on San Francisquito Canyon Road, approximately 0.4 miles south of Dry Gulch Road, as he approached Porter driving northbound in a 2010 Lexus ES350.

John Doe attempted to pass traffic on the two lane road, which is separated by double yellow lines, and traveled onto the northbound lane. As John Doe attempted to pass, he noticed oncoming traffic and made an evasive turn to the right and traveled back onto the southbound lane and into the dirt of the right shoulder.

John Doe then lost control of his vehicle, traveled over the double yellow lines and into oncoming traffic, where he collided with Porter.

The Kia became fully engulfed with fire and John Doe was pronounced dead at the scene. Porter was transported by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital with moderate injuries.

San Francisquito Canyon Road was closed intermittently until 11:19 a.m.

To AV residents, if you would like to drive 65+ MPH, I invite you to take the 14 freeway down to the SCV. Better yet, why don’t you MOVE closer to work and stop terrorizing the people who use San Francisquito Canyon road as normal two lane county road.

    • Bob Chacanaca says:

I agree. For all you idiots who want to pass over double yellow lines and put others lives in danger. Stop at the crosses look up the names and how they died. Almost all because they were the victims or the cause by passing.

      • Devin Hunt says:

For EVERYONE saying this guy is an idiot for rushing to work like we all haven’t before. Youre all so called perfect people who disagree with everything, cough cough liberals and youre the ones who are idiots. This Man, my friend Brad also co worker was a good dude so please stop with the negativity. Remember the word KARMA.

        • Andrew Hale says:

No, Devin, I don’t CROSS A DOUBLE YELLOW LINE because I’m late for work. I call my boss and let him/her know I’ll be late. And yes I am pretty much a perfect driver, having reached the age of 50 without ever causing a traffic accident. It’s not that hard to do, really. The victim in all this isn’t Brad but the woman he almost killed by breaking the law.

  2. Travis levy says:

Been driving this road for decades and have never had a problem . Obey the rules of the road people and you’ll be fine .

  3. brown says:

I hope she makes a speedy recovery. This happens too many times out here. When I make a right turn from plum Canyon onto Bouquet Canyon, it becomes a two lane road. Many times drivers have done this to me, where they drive on the opposite lane to get in front of me. It is a road with very little traffic, however most cars drive much faster than the speed limit. The truth is that I am surprised this doesnt happen a lot more. I am glad it doesnt because usually it is an innocent driver and not the perpetrator that ends up dead or severely injured.

  7. Gera says:

i been diving down San Fran for over 22 years and my self i was a victim of some driving on opposite side of the road my car was completlly destroy. as of cell phone service in the Canyon i think it would be worst people testing and not paying attention it would be a lot more fatalities.

  8. Victoria says:

Cell Phone towers will only cause distracted driving on a road that really can’t tolerate More accidents.
People need to slow down. Posted speed limits are 35 -55 yet people drive 80 and then pass on double yellow blind curves. I’ve been driving this road 2 years now and I’m going to find another route. This road has gotten too dangerous.

  9. JUDY Reinsma says:

I’ve lived on the part of San Francisquito Cyn Rd where passing is allowed about 2 miles north of Copper Hill for 30+ years. At least three have died here and many have crashed in that time. I’ve seen cars trying to pass going three abreast as they fight each other to be first. First to what? Death? This road was never intended to be an alternate to the freeway. I wish those who use it would all slow down, take a deep breath and drive with courtesy and patience. Better to be late than dead.

  10. To all people you gave some comment about my cousin. Thank you and gob bless to all of you

  11. Robert Sherrick says:

I’ve been living in Elizabeth Lake for over 12 years, commuting to Northridge for work, and I’ve seen some truly frightening actions on this road. Not only crossing the double yellow to pass, but doing it while cresting a hill, on blind curves, etc. What’s interesting, though, is that 9 out of 10 times I’ll be waiting a couple cars behind the un-safe driver at the stoplight at Copper Hill! These people are putting their lives and other’s in danger thinking they are saving time, but we usually end up together at the light! They’re saving a couple of car lengths!
My prayers are with the families of BOTH drivers in this crash.
