1924 - SCV Deputy Ed Brown killed in shootout with Gus Le Brun [story]
Deputy Ed Brown

The Santa Clarita City Council will consider purchasing the 4,598-square-foot Roger Dunn Golf Shop building in Newhall when the council meets next week.

Council members will vote on an appropriation of $1.425 million from the Public, Educational, and Governmental Television fund balance for the purchase of the property and related costs. The cost includes the property purchase price of $1.4 million and $25,000 for title, escrow and taxes.

The city plans to make the property the new home of the Santa Clarita Valley public television studio, according to the agenda report.

According to the report, the intended use of a television studio is in alignment with the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan, and the property includes on-site parking.

Potential lease terms with the golf shop are still in negotiations. However, due to the lengthy planning and bidding process to get the building up to par for the city’s intended purpose, there is the possibility the golf shop could lease the property from the city and continue operations once the acquisition is complete.

  1. Why is educational fund money being used for this? How does this benefit education?

    • Tom Lund says:

      Per the FCC website:
“Pursuant to Section 611 of the Communications Act, local franchising authorities may require cable operators to set aside channels for public, educational, or governmental (“PEG”) use.

Public access channels are available for use by the general public. They are usually administered either by the cable operator or by a third party designated by the franchising authority.

Educational access channels are used by educational institutions for educational programming. Time on these channels is typically allocated among local schools, colleges and universities by either the franchising authority or the cable operator.

Governmental access channels are used for programming by local governments. In most jurisdictions, the local governments directly controls these channels.”

In other words: a larger facility for SCVTV could provide more opportunities for students to get some exposure/experience in a television studio.

  2. Sounds like too much money from funds that would be better spent on education. The Station can rent space that isn’t on the Main Street. If they need my help, I’ll find a empty store front in a strip maul cheap. They don’t need to own it to broadcast from it.

  3. Hey Edmond Austin, isn’t this Harry’s old building?

  4. Lindsey Dall says:

    Christine D’Agostino Lotta

  5. Carol Rock says:

Yes, this is the old Century 21 building

  6. What is the reason for the purchase?

  7. Travis Levy says:

GLAD TO HEAR ITS NOT GOING TO BE TURNED INTO A STARBUCKS.SEEMS TO BE THE TREND

  8. Shrek says:

Why would anyone use a building for a studio next to the train tracks? plain dumb! Oh wait, government at work for us…..Someone let the genius bar know we have several real studio buildings within the SCV that would be suited. Unless it’s just a power grab to keep dumping more money into the craphole area of town?

  9. Brian Durand says:

And everything else. It’s a good place for a Starbucks
