The COC women’s golf team wrapped up a remarkable season by finishing just three strokes back of eventual state champions College of the Desert, to take second place at the 2014 CCCAA State Championship held Nov. 16-17 at Morro Bay Golf Course.
COC turned in a day-one score of 324 on Sunday, but entered day two of the tournament in second place, trailing the Roadrunners by a margin of 14 strokes.
However, the Cougars would make things interesting. With COD struggling a bit on Monday, Canyons posted a day-two score of 323 to cut 11 strokes off that lead.
Despite the strong finish, COC ultimately could not complete the comeback.
COC head coach Gary Peterson’s team finished the tourney with a two-day score of 647, while Sierra College finished in third place with a mark of 650.
Individually, COC freshman Tiffany Whittaker carded a 77 on Monday to finish in fifth place overall with a score of 156. As a result, Whittaker has been named a 2014 All-State Honoree.
Freshman Elisabeth Mortensen finished tied for 10th place with a two-day score of 162. Sophomore Andrea Webster carded a 168 to finish tied for 15th among the field of 25 state qualifiers.
Freshman Julia Youn ended her round at 161, to be included among Canyons’ top four finishers.
On the season, COC won all seven WSC events to finish as conference champs for the first time since 2010. In addition, all six COC golfers were named All-Conference.
Canyons finished behind College of the Desert at both the SoCal and State Championship Tournaments.
