Coming on the heels of their first loss of the season, the Lady Mustangs rebounded from Tuesday’s performance against Westmont with a 84-47 victory over La Sierra University Thursday night in Bross Gym.

The non-conference win still keeps the Lady Mustangs tied for second in the Golden State Athletic Conference with Vanguard at 4-1, but lifts their overall record to 18-1.

“We came into tonight wanting to work on our execution and our defensive block-out, and I feel like we rebounded better and were more consistent,” said Lady Mustang Coach Dan Waldeck, “I’m proud of our effort.”

The Lady Mustangs were in fact much more consistent, as the squad shot a collective 50% from the field (33-66) with Jacquelyn Marshall (San Clemente, CA) leading all scorers with 15 points (7-10).  Three other Lady Mustangs scored in double digits with Kimmy Iverson (San Marcos, CA) putting up 14 points, Mille Rivera (Allen, TX) with 12 more, and Lena Rivera (Allen, TX) chipping in 11.

Iverson, who ranks 25th in the NAIA in three-pointers made per game (2.33), was spectacular as the senior guard went 4-7 behind the arc.  Theresa Brown (Eugene, OR) was perfect in free throws by going 2-2 behind the line.

TMC’s stout defense was championed by Brown who led the squad with eight rebounds, followed by Marshall and Kelly Burns (Yorba Linda, CA)  yanking down seven rebounds each. Total rebounds for the Mustangs cumulated at 48. By the end of the night, the Lady Mustangs held the Golden Eagles to a minimal 30% accuracy.

La Sierra hopefully served the Lady Mustangs as a fine tune-up as the squad now returns to conference play with San Diego Christian (11-10, 3-2 GSAC) rolling into Bross Gym on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.

“San Diego is a great team and have been playing extremely well,” commented Waldeck on Saturday’s game. “They’re a loaded squad with great players. We’re going to have to come out and play our A-Game.”
