The No. 13 seeded College of the Canyons women’s basketball team went scoreless for the final five minutes of the first half and never recovered, as the Cougars lost to No. 4 Pasadena City College, 77-59, in the second round of the California Community College Athletic Associations Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
Canyons opened up the game with an 18-9 lead. The Cougars and Lancers went bucket-for-bucket seven minutes, but then the COC offense went quiet.
Following a Pasadena timeout at 5:18, the Lancers proceeded to go on a 19-2 run that would deem fatal for Canyons.
COC tried to a comeback in the second half, coming as close as 13 points in the opening minutes, but Pasadena quickly quieted the Cougars with a 9-3 run that pushed the lead back to 19 points.
Western State Conference, North Division, Player of the Year Keiona Mathews led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. No other COC players turned in double figure scoring. Sophomore guard Shawn Kolani had nine points and six assists, while freshman guard Kiana Calderon was 3-for-3 from the field for 8 points.
The Cougars finish the 2013-14 campaign with a 13-15 record.
