[KHTS] – The Saugus Union School District recently received a grant to support Homeless Education services and is looking to provide additional resources to homeless students and their families in the district.

The Saugus Union School District, or SUSD, received a $3,000 grant on Friday, Nov. 20 from the Los Angeles County Office of Education to support Homeless Education services for the remainder of the 2015-16 school year.

Types of services that can be backed by the grant include: tutoring services, child care scholarships, school supplies, mentoring programs, transportation costs, professional development for site administrators and parent education workshops, according to district officials.

The district currently has over 40 documented homeless families, according to SUSD officials, however there are also many low-income families that are at risk of homelessness.

The grant allows the SUSD “to provide fully for our homeless families and give children the tools they need to thrive academically, emotionally and physically,” according to the district’s mini-grant application form.

“We are allocating the money for after-school programs for homeless students to be able to provide scholarships,” said Lauren Frey, the SUSD’s homeless and foster youth liaison, adding that the district has $2,500 to put toward after-school programs.

The district has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley at Sierra Vista Junior High School for after-school programs, said Frey.

The funds are expected to be available on Jan. 15, 2016, according to district officials.
