1873 - Vasquez gang raids Kingston in (now) Kings County; ties up townspeople, makes off with $2,500 in cash and jewels [story]
Kingston

sheriffscarThe Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has seen an increase in vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collisions which have resulted in numerous injuries and some deaths.

As such, throughout the day on Thursday, Oct. 15, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station will be strongly enforcing vehicle code laws regarding vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians, as well as jaywalking, walking or running in traffic, and crossing streets against signals.

Persons violating these laws with be issued a citation.

It is very important that drivers and pedestrians share our streets and look out for one another.  Vehicles need to always be aware of pedestrians, and pedestrians need to stay on the sidewalks, and cross streets in a safe and legal manner.

  1. Its about time! There are to many pedestrians j walking and texting

    • Problem is that it’s not just pedestrians. It’s also the drivers who think they’re above the cell phone laws or they just don’t care enough to pay close attention to their surroundings.

  2. Carol Clark says:

Curb to curb people. Do not proceed until the pedestrian is on one.

  3. People need to learn to pay attention!! Just because your in a crosswalk doesn’t mean the car will see you!! Having the right of way means nothing when your dead…

  4. Too bad they wont do the same for all the illegals

  5. Teresa Savaikie says:

Well my son Wyatt Savaikie was abiding by the laws he had the green light to walk, in a marked cross walk when a red light driver plowed into him at 45 miles an hour, throwing into a pole and killed him and our family will never, ever be the same. Limits this high are not survivable when someone runs a red-light, notice that I said when they run a red-light not if they run a red-light. Our roads are unsurvivable, there is no room for error and when our babies, our children, our elderly and our community cannot cross a street without risking loss of life is not so AWESOME. An Awesome town needs to make sure our roads are survivable for our citizens and our young. Though Wyatt wasn’t breaking any rules, was 100% NOT at fault some people just don’t pay attention and sometimes kids will be kids and jaywalk which is dangerous but still if our limits weren’t so high they would survive, just as an elderly person trying to cross one of our city crosswalks often can’t get across the crosswalk before the light changes, I and others have witnessed seniors unable to get across Bouquet and sadly sometimes they just turn back because they know they won’t make it. I’m preparing to go to the Youth Grove Ceremony tonight at Central Park. On several occasions we have been at the youth grove and at times we would discuss safety, safety, safety and now I will attend this event with a deep, deep broken heart, still unable to wrap my heart around the idea that Wyatt will never come home again. I am glad that to hear that some sort of action is being taken to protect our community but we really need changes in the speed limits in this valley, some people just don’t pay attention. I watch for animals from a distance but not all of us do that, people just wouldn’t die or be severely injured if our speed limits weren’t so darn high. Heck New York dropped their speed limits to 25, stating that while reducing speed limits from 30 to 25 won’t decrease accidents, a lower speed limit gives the pedestrian a much greater chance at surviving without great harm or death. So at 45, 50 and everyone knows that so,e people are driving much faster than that, our speed limits are simply not survivable even when a pedestrian is suppose to be safe, so many of us simply don’t pay attention.

  6. Teresa Savaikie says:

Carol Clark, thank you, well said! From Wyatt Savaikie’s Mom.

  7. Lorena Sands says:

Watch out Now!!! He’s a comin’!

  8. Dwayne Pine says:

Go by any school , tell me why kids don’t look both ways before crossing the street
When did people stop teaching this to kids

  9. Crystal Anne says:

I use a crosswalk almost everyday and have lost count of how many vehicles rush past me to get by as I’m already in the crosswalk. Vehicles don’t keep the crosswalk clear and there have been many times thatI have to wait and make eye contact with the driver because they haven’t looked or noticed that I have a walk signal.

  10. Both, drivers and pedestrians are very distracted.

  11. Office of traffic safety grant money to fun increased patrol at school zones pre/ post school??

  12. Susie Hilton says:

They could pay one officers salary for a year ticketing crosswalk violations at McBean and Valencia Blvd

  13. Ben Green says:

I have always wondered what the procedure was legally when it came to making a right hand turn with a pedestrian crossing. I always waited til they were half way out or up to half way in that I deemed safe.

    • Here is the law. From talking to officers, the general rule is that you don’t cause the pedestrian to be impacted by your turn. So, if they have passed you, you give them enough room in case they slow down, and if the are walking toward you, you don’t turn if you’ll be anywhere near them. Bottom-line, if an officer thinks you’ve rushed to beat the pedestrian or that you’ve turned too closely behind them, you’ll get cited

21950. (a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter. (b) The provisions of this section shall not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of using due care for his or her safety. No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian shall unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. (c) The provisions of subdivision (b) shall not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.

    • Ben Green says:

Hmm. Simple enough. I’ll just keep doing what I’ve been doing then.

  14. Tricia Cascione says:

While I appreciate the effort…why are we enforcing laws for only one selected day? Why not everyday? If we save one life it is worth any amount of money. Plus the fines would pay for the cost of enforcement.

  15. I’d love to see deputies by Hart High. Day after day teen cross everywhere. If they do use a cross walk they just walk right in without pausing to look.

I blame the crossing guard at the corner of Newhall Ave and 13th street for teaching the children in that area they don’t need to stop. She walks out and stops traffic before the kids get to the cross walk. I’ve called the city about it several times over the last 4 years and it has never changed. She needs to be replaced.

    • I totally agree with you happened to me numerous times in front of Hart High where a kid just dashes out the street without looking because they don’t want to use the crosswalk since they live in those apartments across the street.

YES the crossing guard lady just walks out stops the traffic. If she hates to be a crossing guard she need to not do it anymore.

    • She is teaching all the children, teems and adults in that area that they are entitled and traffic should stop for them. She may be responsible for someone’s death someday.

  16. Teresa Savaikie says:

We talked safety 24/7 with our son Wyatt. He had a green light a driver ran a late red-light and killed our son. We have a very large percentage of youth in this valley and our speed limits are out of control, there is no fault of my sons, he’s dead, just gone, because someone was in a hurry came around a corner a 45 plus miles an hour. We taught our son right, we talked about safety the mam that him never saw him, not one single skid mark. Just returning from the youth grove ceremony, no where we ever, ever imagined we would ever, ever be. Yes kids should always look both ways but we grown ups need to be careful, kids will be kids sometimes when we are young we think we will live forever, nothing will ever happen to us (we sometimes think when we are young) but drivers need to ne more careful. Again Wyatt didn’t do anything wrong and as drivers we need to look curb to curb when approaching a crosswalk. Although Wyatt wasn’t doing anything wrong, was not at fault we just all need to pay more attention when we get in our cars. Honestly we taught our children to never, ever j walk nut had Wyatt been killed in that fashion by a driver I’d still probably wonder why he wasn’t oaring attention. I feel it’s my responsibility to keep an eye out when I’m behind the wheel and to me that means looking ahead, watching the roads for people and animals for my safety and the safety of others. There have been so many pedestrians hit and probably quite a few unreported accidents when major injury or death doesn’t occur. I don’t know what all the answers are, sure wish I did, but I do believe that as drivers, as adults, we have an obligation to our youth, to our community to obey the rules and remember that a vehicle is a weapon when flying through red lights, through neighborhoods, crosswalks etc., God I miss my son, there are no words to describe how painful this loss is, I just hope we find a way as a community to do more to protect other parents from losing their own special loved one. The loss of a child, so sudden, unexpected, he wasn’t into drugs, nor drinking, nor off to war, nor in law enforcement (which he often said he was interested in), he was not sick he was just being a good boy on the way to the gym and just like that, he was taken from us and he’s gone, simply gone. My heart breaks for those who have walked in our shoes and my mind hopes there can be changes made to make accidents survivable.

  17. Carol Round says:

I was behind a young driver today off Pamlico… never actually stopped for a stop sign …. and the person actually thought it was his right away cutting me off when I stopped at the stop sign and he kiiindaaa did lol!

  18. Len Rothmann says:

When will the state pass a law to prohibit texting and driving?

  19. Yes pedestrians have the right away but that doesn’t mean you’ll be seen. Its look both ways before crossing and be aware of your surroundings for your own safety.

  20. Ana Najera says:

Yeah how about we have the sherif that has been parked at the same spot for months on Newhall ranch to do other the try to get everyone’s speeds

  21. The crossing area by the Newhall Metrolink station and the am express bus stop needs patrolling – many cars run lights there and a lot of narrow misses of passengers in the early mornings. Also Seco/Bouquet of course, and start ticketing all the adults on cell phones driving by school crosswalks.

  22. Almost knocked by a Sheriff’s SUV while in the crosswalk before.
Just a quick squall in my ears.

  23. Karina Neri says:

Kris Carrion I hope they post up on Soledad!!????

  24. Peggy Gelpi says:

I hope they patrol near La Mesa Junior High at dismissal time. While the majority of the students cross Via Princess at the crosswalk, many of them cross wherever they want at Via Princessa or on Gregory. They come from behind parked cars on Gregory and just dart into the street. Very, very often, parents are making illegal u-turns in the middle of Via Princessa to pick up students and have no problem stopping on Via Princessa to pick up a student. A terrible accident is going to happen here. I hope something is done before it does.

  25. BlankaLi says:

Will the officers be observing the law for themselves? Officer just died was not wearing a seatbelt.

  26. It’s funny when I see people in market parking lots walk behind me as I back out or step off the curb right in front of me or another car as tho there is a steel barrier that will protest them.! They should never assume they are safe in cross walks for the same reason either.I’m very careful but they should be too.
