Virgil Hill, 50, fights Virgil Hill, Jr. in a three-round exhibition Saturday in Fargo, ND
Five-time world champion Virgil Hill is making his comeback to the boxing ring and he started with a three-round exhibition against his son, Virgil Hill, Jr.
Hill, 50, is coming out of retirement to fight in one professional bout. The 1984 Olympic silver medalist fought his son Saturday night at the Fargo Civic Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
“Being in the ring with my son meant the world to me,” Hill told inforum.com. “It supersedes the Hall of Fame.”
“He did great,” Virgil Hill, Jr. said. “I was in the ring with a five-time world champion, and it means even more that he is my father. He still can move and he didn’t pull any punches.”
At the end of the three-round exhibition, fans cheered for the Virgil Hill they believed won the fight. The decision: father defeated son.
Hill, Sr., who owns a 50-7 record as a pro and won titles as a light heavyweight and a cruiserweight, will have his professional bout on February 28 at the Bismarck Civic Center.
Valencia High School grad Virgil Hill, Jr., played in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league baseball organization after being drafted in the sixth round out of Mission College in 2009. He left pro ball in 2012 and is now pursuing a boxing career, following his father’s footsteps by starting in North Dakota. He is 3-0 in the super middleweight division.
