U.S. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon
[Rep. Buck McKeon] – Today, House Democrats blocked efforts to pass legislation calling for a Balance Budget Amendment to the United States Constitution. Congressman McKeon cast his vote for this crucial legislation that, if enacted, would force the Federal Government to act with fiscal responsibility and live within its means.
“Our government has ballooned to unsustainable and unacceptable levels. Unfortunately for years now, the government’s answer to running negligent deficits has been to borrow and tax with impunity. Today we face a $15 Trillion national debt that is equal to almost our entire economy, and a federal government that has grown far beyond the scope our founding fathers intended. If we do not grab the reins and take responsibility now, our children and grandchildren will have to pay the consequences of our reckless inaction. Our future generations will not live in a great and powerful America.
“Passing the Balanced Budget Amendment would have ended the continuous struggle for fiscal responsibility, forcing the Federal Government to live within its means, just like families and businesses across America have to do. It is time to make the tough decisions needed to address our fiscal challenges and the drivers of our debt. The passage of the Balanced Budget Amendment would have done just that, doing away with the bloated spending mentality that has prevailed for far too long. It is unfortunate that Democrats in the House refuse to acknowledge our perilous fiscal situation and continue to block efforts to restore fiscal sanity to Washington.”
