It’s November, and as our thoughts turn to the upcoming holiday season, I wanted to let you know about a few things happening in our city.
If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to get involved with the Santa Clarita Marathon, but running isn’t your speed, you are cordially invited to join me and members of the Santa Clarita City Council on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 7:15 a.m. for the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Walk. Hosted as part of our Healthy Santa Clarita program, this 3-mile walk is perfect for families, groups and teams. The course follows much of the 5K run course along paseos and city trails and ends at the official Marathon finish line at the mall. For more information visit SCMarathon.org.
Sunday, Nov. 11, is Veterans’ Day, and the city has a very special program that will be held at Veteran’s Historical Plaza in Old Town Newhall (Market Street and Walnut Street). The program will begin at 11 a.m. with a moment of silence, followed by the changing of the flags which will be done by the Knights of Columbus, Santa Clarita Assembly and representatives from various armed services recruiting offices. Other events are also planned for this important day including dedications and music. The Santa Clarita Veteran’s Day Ceremony is free and open to everyone.
The city wants to encourage those of all ages to attend, as it is important to ensure that our younger generations understand the true meaning of Veterans Day and the enormous sacrifices veterans have made to secure and defend the freedoms of the United States of America.
Finally, I wanted to let you know that the city and College of the Canyons are hosting a free flu shot clinic on Friday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the college’s east physical education gym building, 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road. The seasonal flu vaccination is recommended for all people 6 months and older. Accommodation is available for individuals with mobility challenges. For safety concerns, service dogs only are allowed on campus. For more information, call 661-250-3708.
There are so many great programs and events happening in our city. I would like to encourage you to check them out on our community calendar available on the city’s website at www.santa-clarita.com.
Frank Ferry is mayor of the city of Santa Clarita.
