The Master’s University men’s basketball team continues to prepare for the 2016-17 campaign by adding Matthew McClain to its roster.
“I chose The Master’s University because it is the best place for me,” commented McClain. “I know that the environment will be a supportive one. I will be around a group of people that have a good idea of what a healthy lifestyle is and are willing to help me maintain one. I’m looking forward to the experience in all aspects: the difference in location, a new start with the basketball program and its staff, and being able to finish my degree.”
The 6-5 forward transfers to TMU from Lander University where he played an integral role in securing back-to-back Peach Belt Conference championships for the Bearcats. During the 2015-16 season, McClain competed in 29 games where he shot 43 percent from the field, including 38 percent from behind the arc, over 88 percent from the charity stripe. McClain also claimed 79 rebounds, 20 assists, 15 steals, and three blocks.
As a Mustang, McClain strives to reach a number of admirable goals.
“While in college, I want to do the best I can and leave a mark,” said McClain. “I also hope that I can make an impact in the team’s efforts and help achieve its goals.”
Off the court, McClain is a communication major and looks to pursue a career in basketball and media.
“We are excited to add an athlete as versatile as Matthew,” commented first-year head coach Kelvin Starr. “He played a big role on a NCCA Division II conference championship team last year. He should have an immediate impact here at TMU.”
McClain joins Michael Taylor, a 6-5 guard from Wildomar, California, Hansel Atencia, a 5-10 point guard from Bucaramanga, Colombia, Nathaniel Dodson, a 5-11 point guard from Canyon Lake, California, Lawrence Russell, a 6-5 guard from Port Townsend, Washington, Timothy Soares, a 6-10 forward from Brazil, Travis Yenor, a 6-8 guard/forward from Boise, ID, Noah Peterson, a 6-2 guard from Santa Clarita, California, and a handful of returning players on TMU’s 2016-17 roster.
