Hart High grad Trevor Bauer made a brief, but effective debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Atlanta Braves.
The first-round pick gave up two runs on five hits in four innings in his Major League debut. He had to leave the game down 2-0 because of a groin injury.
But the Diamondbacks won the game, 3-2, with a home run by Chris Young in the ninth inning.
In track and field, Santa Clarita’s Allyson Felix won her heat race in the 200 at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
She won silver medals in the 200 in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.
Canyon High graduate Lauren Fleshman finished in 16th place in the 5,000 at the Olympic Trials. She reached the final race, but was unable to earn a spot on the US Olympic team.
In swimming, Hart High graduate Anthony Ervin was 13th in the semifinals in the 100 freestyle at the US Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Ervin won a gold medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He has one more chance to make the Olympic team in the 50 freestyle.
In hockey, the Kings and goaltender Jonathan Quick agreed to a 10-year contract extension. Quick led the Kings to their first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history and won the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup finals.
In baseball, the Dodgers finally scored a couple of runs, but it wasn’t enough to snap their losing streak.
The Dodgers lost to the visiting Mets, 3-2, and fell out of first place in the National League West standings. The Dodgers have lost five games in a row.
The Dodgers face the Mets again tonight at Dodger Stadium. It will be Aaron Harang for the Dodgers against knuckleballer R.A. Dickey for the Mets.
