Hamlet Marte hit two of Lancaster’s four home runs to help the JetHawks knock off the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, 9-5, on Saturday night at The Hangar.
Brendan Rodgers and Brian Mundell also went deep for the second consecutive night. Rodgers has three home runs in the series. The four long balls tied a season-high for the JetHawks.
Marte’s first blast opened the scoring in the second inning. It scored Wes Rogers, who drew a two-out walk. Brendan Rodgers doubled Lancaster’s lead with a two-run shot of his own in the third inning. He later delivered an RBI double in the sixth. Rodgers finished 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI.
Garrett Hampson opened the bottom of the fifth with a double and scored two batters later on Yonathan Daza’s sacrifice-fly. Daza, playing center field, also made a sensational running catch later in the contest.
Leading 7-1, Mundell started the bottom of the seventh with a solo homer. He now leads the California League with 11 long balls and 41 RBI. Marte added his second two-run blast of the game later in the frame to finish with four RBI.
Inland Empire scored three times in the eighth and once in the ninth, but stranded eight runners over the final three innings. They went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base in the game. Michael Barash drove in four runs for the 66ers with a pair of doubles and a groundout.
Craig Schlitter (7-1) tossed seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out six to become the first pitcher in the California League to reach seven wins. Of his 10 outings this season, eight have been quality starts.
Alexander Guillen was summoned with the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth. The right-hander retired all three hitters he faced to record his fifth save.
Here’s the box score.
The four-game series continues on Sunday afternoon at The Hangar. Right-hander Trey Killian (5-1) will start for Lancaster against right-hander Austin Robichaux (1-2). First pitch is 2:05 p.m.
