Assemblyman Scott Wilk’s bill requiring the Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District to hold its board meetings within the boundaries of the district as it relates to addressing pollutant levels passed unanimously out of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
“Ratepayers should have the ability to engage in dialogue with the Board members and not have to drive to Whittier when the board is making important decisions that affect their wallets,” said Wilk, R-Santa Clarita.
Currently the SCV Sanitation District holds some of its meetings in Whittier, 50 miles from the community it hsa jurisdiction over. Wilk says this discourages public testimony from ratepayers and hinders their ability to stay informed on issues directly affecting their home values and water rates.
AB 951 will provide the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley with better government by creating greater transparency and public oversight on the actions of Santa Clarita Valley Sanitation District Board of Directors when addressing Total Maximum Daily Loads (pollutants).
Next the bill heads to the Senate Floor.
Wilk represents the Simi Valley, the northwestern section of the San Fernando Valley and most of the Santa Clarita Valley in the state Assembly.
