The Santa Clarita Runners Club has raised $2,630 for the SCV Food Pantry and is hoping that increased awareness of the need will bring in even more donations. The initial sum was raised Dec. 10 at the club’s run of “The Beast,” a trail at Whitney Canyon Park.
The entry fees and earnings from T-shirt sales were all donated to the Food Pantry. At the event, enough canned goods were collected to fill the Food Pantry’s van.
“We feel it is good for us to help those who have not been as fortunate as us and are in need of help. It’s the right thing to do,” said Don McLean, one of the runners.
McLean added that the challenge of running “The Beast” served as a way to get people’s attention and bring donations for the Food Pantry. “The Beast” is a 4.86 mile trail that includes a more than 2000 foot incline. Runners who completed the trail were able to purchase a T-shirt that reads “I conquered The Beast.”
“It’s good to see us reach beyond ourselves and our family and help out,” said McLean.
