A Ukiah man was killed late Thursday night when he walked into a truck route traffic lane in the Newhall Pass.
The name of the 37-year-old victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, the victim was walking along the dirt shoulder between the regular traffic lanes and the truck lanes of the southbound Interstate 5 freeway at 10:50 p.m. when, for an determined reason, he walked into the No. 1 truck route lane – directly into the path of an oncoming 1999 Kenworth W900 tractor-trailer.
The left front end of the big-rig struck the victim, “projecting him onto the right shoulder” of the main part of the freeway south of Newhall and north of Balboa Boulevard, the CHP report states.
Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The name of the 42-year-old trucker from Perris was not released. He was uninjured, and he is not suspected to have been impaired by drugs or alcohol. Weather conditions were described as clear and cold.
