A. CONTINUED PUBLIC HEARING
ITEM 1 – MASTER CASE NO. 13-115, ZONE CHANGE 13-008, SPECIFIC PLAN AMENDMENT 13-002 (ZONING AMENDMENT)

Applicant: City of Santa Clarita
Location: Downtown Newhall Specific Plan Area
Request: The project would amend the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan (DNSP) to reformat the document to a standard size, change the zoning on 28 parcels, and revise the code to clean up minor errors, better define land uses, and reflect updated references to the Unified Development Code. This would be the fourth amendment to the DNSP.
Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Planning Commission receive additional testimony from the public; close the public hearing; and adopt Resolution P14-01 that recommends that the City Council (1) adopt the Negative Declaration prepared for the project, and (2) approve Master Case 13-115, consisting of Zone Change 13-008 and Specific Plan Amendment 13-002 (Zoning Amendment), consisting of amendments to the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan (Exhibit “A”).

Applicant: Albert Einstein Academy for Letters, Arts and Sciences
Location: 25300 Rye Canyon Road (APN: 2866-011-010)
Request: The applicant is requesting the approval of a conditional use permit to allow for the operation of a primary school with up to 650 students in grades Kindergarten-6th (K-6), with an additional 37 teachers and employees. The property is located in the BP (Business Park) zone within the Valencia Industrial Center.
Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Planning Commission receive the information and materials that constitute Master Case 13-075 (CUP 13-005) and adopt Resolution P14-04 denying the request for a Conditional Use Permit to allow for the operation of a primary school within the BP zone at 25300 Rye Canyon Road in the Valencia Industrial Center.

A school with 650 kids in a business park? Roll up the door kids… time for recess!! Roach Coach lunch again?
Wow….that’s one of the most ignorant posts I’ve seen here. You do realize that there are other schools operating in this area of town right? Do you even live in SCV?
Aren’t they 05 … They’ve been rejected numerous times.
The recomendation for denial is likely due to several factors. A charter is paid for with public funds, and is generally supposed to provide services in an area that the local school district is lacking. For example, if our local districts were low performing in math, parents might want an opportunity for their children to be at a different school, a school that is free and public, but not run the same policy umbrella as their failing school. Our local schools are not failing. Another issue is that they have to seek approval from the district they are building in. Previously, this charter promised a site in Agua Dulce. Agua Dulce approved it. Students were being taken out of local schools here, and bused to Agua Dulce, presumably with Agua Dulce funds. Next, there is the matter of location. The industrial center is not exactly the best spot for an elementary school. Have you ever had to go through the mixed use industrial area on Smyth when Valencia students are released? There would have to be changes in traffic patterns and speed limits for this site to open there.
They are purchasing the Pinecrest location on Orchard Village now.

Out daughter is currently attending this school and we love it and our daughter loves it. Joel, I don’t know any other kids in a locate public school learning Mandarin and Hebrew. And I wish we got for lunch what these kids get to choose from ie. Sushi.

I don’t see the problem with putting a school in the industrial center Trinity school is there I’m sure they don’t roll Amy door open and don’t eat from a roach coach

My son went to Pinecrest from 18months-6yrs old and he is currently attending AEa in Agua Dulce. His math and reading grades have improved drastically. The foreign language is an added bonus to the curriculum. Also lunch is amazing, chicken Caesar salad, sushi, hummus/ pita and veggies box. I just don’t see why all the negativity behind this school???

Wow this is crazy!!! Is Albert Einstein academy pre school through middle school? Can someone tell me abt the school since if they buy pinecrest( which we are currently leaving to go to Montessori)

Buying Pinecrest may just be a rumor but they may be considering it.

Agua Dulce funds are not being used for bus transportation. The parents are paying out of pocket for the bus. That’s how bad we want to be with AEA. Thousands of us parents are sticking with it through thick and thin. This school does provide a service they cannot get a public Elementary, Languages and smaller class sizes beyond 3rd grade.
They opened escrow last week on the Pinecrest property.
My understanding is Pinecrest is big enough for the current student body but does not allow accommodation for the very very long wait list.
The AeA junior high & high school is just up the street, across from Trinity in an industrial area. Both schools are doing very well. AeA JH/HS has a substantial wait list as well.
