Project Lead Kindly Grant
Project Lead Kindly awarded a grant to one of our clients! Miss N came to our shelter with only her purse and the clothes she was wearing. While at the shelter she led kindly by supporting other women at the shelter and going to the library to get books for the children and women at the shelter. Miss N. is committed to changing her life and wants to start fresh and go back to school. Our partners at Lead Kindly awarded Miss N. a grant to pay for a deposit on an apartment after she leaves our shelter, and a promise for another monetary award towards school supplies, books or tuition as long as Miss N. fulfills her goals. Miss N. wants to become a Social Worker and help other women that have been in her same situation. We congratulate Miss N. on being strong and brave to make changes to better her life. We thank Project Lead Kindly for being able to assist one of our clients in making a better life for herself after she leaves us.

Beauty Power!
Sally Van Swearingen, local make-up artist to the stars, wrote a book called “It’s Not Over Yet” to help women find their beauty power! She even interviewed our very own Executive Director, Linda Davies, for her book! Sally has graciously donated a portion of her book proceeds back to the Domestic Violence Center! We thank Sally so much for her generosity! Sally’s book can be purchased at Barnes & Noble.

Close to Home Project
You may have heard that we partnered with SCVi and Strength United to bring a project to the students of SCVi. We will teach them about domestic violence awareness, sexual assault awareness and teen dating violence awareness. A special group of selected students will create a plan for how to address these issues in our community. Jessica from Strength United (SU) and Karissa from the DVC met with Sara and Theresa from SCVi to discuss the goals of the project. Jessica (SU) and Karissa (DVC) will be going to the middle school advisory class to tell the students about the project. SCVi will identify 15 learners to participate. Jessica (SU) and Karissa (DVC) will also host a parent night to communicate with the parents our goals for the project and how their children will be participating. A Window Between Worlds
A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) is an organization dedicated to helping the victims of domestic abuse and their children by providing them a “Window of Time” to express themselves through art. They have recently broadened their mission statement to include survivors of any kind of trauma. We currently hold classes for both women and children at our Outreach Center. Natalie, is one of our leaders in AWBW and on February 10th she will be giving a workshop for the Soroptimist Club. The workshop is “Heart Stories”. It’s a workshop that asks the participant “If your heart could speak, what would it say?” For our clients it’s a very powerful workshop and we think it’s very relatable for everyone.

Client Gala
For the first time ever, we decided to host a Gala for our clients. We wanted them to feel good in the New Year! We had representatives from Mary Kay come out and do our clients make-up, they got their hair done and they got to dress up in fancy dresses. We had a lovely dinner, served to our clients by Girl Scout troop #4896! Dinner was donated by BJ’s and Friday’s. The lovely ladies were also serenaded by a lovely live band. The women listened to a survivor of domestic violence tell her story, and all the women wrote down some goals that they have for the New Year. It was a wonderful evening! Thank you to Christina and Karissa for putting together and throwing the Gala for our clients! The women had a lot of fun and felt good about the night.

Gold Award Project
Lindsey was so kind to clean and organize our storage closet as her Gold Award Project! “Before Lindsey organized the closet we had to climb over pillows and blankets and boxes to try to find something, or we had to pull everything in the middle out so we could get to the stuff in the back. Now everything has a place so it’s easier to take out and more importantly put back correctly where it belongs.” – Tiffany, DVC Office Manager

Too Apparel
We are excited to have recently become partners with Too Apparel! Too Apparel was founded by a couple named Kevin and Sara and their mission is for every pair of women’s underwear purchased from their website, they will donate a pair of underwear to a women’s or children’s shelter. We are hoping that we will soon be receiving underwear for the women at our shelter.
