[Prescott, Ariz.] – For the second time this season, The Master’s University women’s soccer team was forced to compete in double overtime. Also for the second time this season, the Lady Mustangs had to settle for a 1-1 draw as TMU remained gridlocked with No. 24 Embry-Riddle for the majority of Monday’s match.
Monday’s tie moves TMU’s record to 1-2-2.
The Lady Mustangs’ got off to a rocky start when ERU’s Estelle Fortes connected with an assist from teammate Breanna Larkin and put the ball past TMU’s Jessica Zubia (Bakersfield, CA) three minutes and 21 seconds into play. Notably, the Eagles’ offense aggressively looked to further its lead by launching a total of seven shots in the first half.
After halftime, TMU got on the board at the 47:22 mark when Hailey Gomillion (Lancaster, CA) scored off a header.
Despite TMU and ERU both posting four shots in the second half, the two clubs were unable to capitalize on their opportunities to take the lead during regulation play.
ERU’s offensive efforts eclipsed TMU’s in overtime as the Eagles posted three shots in both stanzas. However, Zubia’s stellar goalkeeping kept the Lady Mustangs from facing their second loss of the season as the senior goalkeeper tallied seven saves.
Commenting on Monday’s match, TMU head coach Curtis Lewis said, “The girls rebounded well from Saturday’s loss to earn a hard-fought 1-1 tie. Hailey Gomillion notched her second goal of the year off a very crafty header to tie the game early in the second half. Todd has done a great job with ERU, and they will do well in the CalPac this year. We have a short week and that will end with two away games up in Tahoe. It has been a grueling preseason and we look forward to having a home game here shortly.”
This weekend, the Lady Mustangs will play Eastern Oregon on Thursday at 1:00 p.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. match the next day against Sierra Nevada. Both matches will take place at North Tahoe Regional Park, in Lake Tahoe.
