COMPTON – The University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (20-17-1; 16-5 Cal Pac) completed a three-game sweep of the Mariners of Marymount California University (16-14-2; 12-9 Cal Pac) Sunday afternoon with a 10-3 win in game one of the doubleheader, and a 16-2 win in seven innings in game two, in April 7 California Pacific Conference baseball action at the MLB Academy in Compton.

After the sweep of the Mariners, UAV sits alone in second place in the Cal Pac standings with a four-game lead on MCU, and trail the No. 16-ranked Redhawks of Benedictine-Mesa (35-8; 17-3 Cal Pac) by 1-1/2 games, as the two teams are scheduled to meet in Mesa at the end of this week for a three-game series with Cal Pac supremacy up for grabs.

The Redhawks swept the Pioneers earlier this season in Lancaster, but UAV has kept things close in the standings and can regain the top spot in Cal Pac with two or three wins against BENU this weekend.

GAME ONE: Things were close after four innings with UAV leading by the narrowest of margins, 4-3, but the Pioneers would go on to hang a six spot in the top of the seventh inning to blow open the game, going on to earn the victory, 10-3.

UAV senior starter Donovan Bertoncini (Madera, CA) (4-3) earned the win and allowed seven hits and three runs, two earned, across six innings, walking five and striking out three, and freshman reliever Zach Carr (Madera, CA) pitched three innings and picked up his first career save, allowing just three hits while fanning two.

Four Pioneers had a multi-hit game, including freshman second baseman Jacob Ogle (Riverside, CA), sophomore catcher Gerardo Castaneda (Tula De Allende, CA), junior shortstop Tyler Van Marter (Yucaipa, CA), and sophomore right fielder Keola Viloria (Diamond Bar, CA).

Van Marter also knocked in three, senior third baseman Nate Broaddus (Lemoore, CA) and junior first baseman Allen Pacheco (San Pedro, CA) each added a hit and RBI, and junior left fielder Kaleyl Anderson (Victorville, CA) knocked in one run and walked once.

GAME TWO: UAV remained completely in control in the second game as its bats amassed 14 hits in seven innings, totaling 16 runs, including a 10-run seventh inning en route to picking up the win to complete the sweep, 16-2.

UAV lefty sophomore Cameron Heinrich (Riverside, CA) (8-1) earned his eighth win of the season, moving him into a tie with BENU’s Aaron Vernon for the most wins in conference.

Heinrich allowed six hits and just one run in six innings of work, walking two and striking out four, and senior right-hander Tanner White (Martinez, CA) pitched one inning of relief and allowed two hits and a run while striking out two.

Anderson and Van Marter each finished with three hits and two RBI, and senior infielder Torin Miller (Hanford, CA) smashed a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning, his first of the season and the second of his career.

Pacheco went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, junior catcher Braydon Torres-Moore (Nampa, ID) went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, and junior center fielder Cole Carder (Medford, OR) crushed his Cal Pac leading eighth home run of the season, scored three runs and knocked in two.

NEXT GAME: Coached by Jacob Garsez, the Pioneers remain on the road to face Arizona Christian University for a single, non-conference game on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. PST in Surprise, Ariz.
