Acton residents are mopping up today after flash flooding caused impassable roadways and trapped motorists Thursday afternoon.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, an intense storm cell materialized over the Acton area which caused more than 1.5 inches of rain fall in just a 30-minute period. The rain caused intense mud, water, and debris flow which created challenges for residents and commuters in the area.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, Los Angeles County Fire Department and Public Works personnel quickly responded.
Sheriff and fire personnel with swift water rescue and air assets were dispatched to the area. The Los Angeles County Fire Department performed at least three air rescues of stranded or trapped motorists. No injuries were reported. Much of the water has subsided and clean-up efforts have already begun.
Members of L.A. County’s swift-water rescue team rescued a total of 14 people, Fire Department officials said.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works received multiple calls related to mud and rocks on roadways. They also responded and are working to clear the roadways. The DPW reported a road closure from Country Way to Lower Crown Valley due to a mudslide; the estimated reopening date is to be determined.
A Metrolink train stopped traveling along Soledad Canyon Road at Aliso Canyon Road, when the conductor saw the area near the tracks may have been compromised by the flooding and felt it was not safe to proceed. The train was able to back away from the area and stopped at Crown Valley Road to await a track inspection for safety precautions.
California Highway Patrol closed the roads near the train for safety. Sheriff’s personnel from six stations responded to help secure and assess the area, and assist with the train safety and overall operation. After the train tracks were evaluated, the Metrolink train was cleared to back up to the Via Princessa Station in order to have the remaining passengers transported to various final destinations.
The assessment and cleanup of the area continues. Calls for service should be directed to the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station at (661) 272-2400.
