The German grocery store chain ALDI officially opened its doors to Santa Clarita residents Thursday morning, ushering in shoppers who were hoping to be the lucky recipients of a $100 gift card to the store.
As part of the grand opening, the first 100 customers received a gift card, or “Golden Ticket,” that was valued between $10 to $100 towards the store.
Laurie Finkelstein was one of the lucky $100 gift card winners, a prize she was “very excited” to receive, especially after spending about 45-minutes waiting in line.
“I’ve read about this store for weeks,” Finkelstein said. “I hear amazing things about it so I’m excited to be here.”
Councilwoman Marsha McClean takes a tour of ALDI.
ALDI differentiates itself from other stores on the market by using different techniques to make grocery shopping as simple as possible, all while bringing low prices to its customers.
“We are all about simplicity and we like to make sure that we are keeping our prices low, while of course serving the customer,” said Sammi Tannor, the District Manager for ALDI. “People really love shopping with us because of our price and our exceptional quality.”
Private label products, about 90 percent of their products are developed in the ALDI test kitchens and made to meet or exceed national brands, and unique shopping features are used to create a more simple, economical grocery shopping experience for consumers.
With approaches such as its “quarter in the cart” system, where customers insert a quarter to unlock a shopping cart at the beginning of their trip and get their quarter back upon returning the cart at the end of their trip, to its “double guarantee,” where customers can get a complete refund plus a replacement on any of ALDI’s private label products if they are unsatisfied with it, Aldi hopes to bring a unique, simple, and cost effective shopping trip to consumers.
Each of its approaches is used with the intention of “making sure we can have the lowest prices for our customer,” Tannor said.

ALDI is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day and is located on Lyons Avenue and Old Orchard Village Road, in the space formerly occupied by Ralphs.
Head out to the store throughout the coming weekend–Dec. 16 to 18–for special events to celebrate the grand opening, such as face painting and balloon twister on Saturday and a free ice cream truck for shoppers on Sunday.
