1903 - President Teddy Roosevelt visits Gov. Henry Gage at Acton Hotel [story]
Acton Hotel

Kick off Santa Clarita’s Cowboy Festival weekend with a special Friday night performance from Tom Hiatt and the Sundown Riders on Friday, April 20, at the OutWest Boutique and Cultural Center in Old Town Newhall.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; concert starts at 8 p.m. There’s a suggested donation of $20 – which isn’t really enough, if you think about, for host Jim Bell’s outrageous buffalo chili.

Come for the chili and stay for some great Western ballads – and remember to dress for TV because you’ll be on it. If you’re worried you don’t have something presentable, arrive early and Bobbi Bell will fix you up.

OutWest is located at 24265 Main Street. Call 661-255-7087 and let ’em know you’re coming.

About Tom Hiatt

Tom Hiatt

Cowboy Balladeer Tom Hiatt can truly be called a “Son of the West,” because at one time or another, Texas, California, Alaska, Kansas, and Arizona, have all been called “Home.” The magnificent landscapes and the people who settled them fill the stories in the ballads Tom writes and sings: tales of cowboys, outlaws, lawmen, pioneers, wild broncos, and more.
Tom’s warm, emotion filled voice has enthralled people from Montana to Arizona, from the Rockies to the Smokies, and all areas in between. He has appeared with other popular cowboy singers and poets such as Ian Tyson, Chris LeDoux, Waddie Mitchell, The Sons of the San Joaquin, Don Edwards, and Sourdough Slim at many venues throughout the country.

His engagements  have included TV and radio programs, rodeos, schools, universities, museums, dinner theaters, and guest ranches. The Autry National Center, Olaf Wieghorst Western Heritage Days, the Carson City Rendezvous, and the Museum of Lone Pine Film History are just a few of the noteworthy venues where Tom has performed. He has been interviewed on the NBC Nightly News and has also sung the National Anthem at a Major League Baseball game. For over 17 years, Tom, along with his band, THE SUNDOWN RIDERS, performed for thousands of guests at “Rawhide,” Arizona’s famous western theme park.

Tom’s repertoire includes traditional and contemporary western classics that are always a “hit” with audiences from all walks of life. They especially enjoy Tom’s original ballads that have been inspired by his own cowboying experiences, as well as those of other cowboys he has been proud to call his friends through the years.

So, in the words of one of Tom’s songs… “Grab your hat and saddle your horse / Let the show begin / Let’s put those “Rough Ridin’ Cowboy Heroes” / Back in the saddle again!”

About The Sundown Riders

BRUCE HUNTINGTON, from Ocean Beach, California, plays bass, sings harmony and has
been performing with Tom for 2 years. An exemplary musician, Bruce excels in not only the western genre but in several others as well. Texas swing, bluegrass, early jazz, and Brazilian are some of the styles in which he also demonstrates his vast knowledge and virtuosity of both the acoustic and electric bass. Bruce was in high demand for the shows and revues of Las Vegas for over a decade where he performed with such groups as “The Drifters” and “The Coasters.” Bruce is also a superb songwriter and has been nominated by the Western Music Association for “Songwriter of the Year” and has had three compositions nominated for “Song of the Year.”

KEN WILCOX, from Crest, California, plays lead guitar, sings harmony and has been performing with Tom for a year. Ken is a longtime admirer of folk, blues, country, bluegrass and western music. He especially enjoys studying the guitar styles of Red Shea, former lead guitar player with Gordon Lightfoot, and Leo Kottke.  Ken has performed at many venues throughout the Southwest. He played guitar, slide guitar, and autoharp for nine years with the “Mark Jackson Band.” His first musical love remains getting together in a circle in front of the hearth and swapping songs and stories with family, friends, and other musicians. He and his wife Darlene have been known to put on some fun filled gatherings at their home, where no one leaves feeling unfed, physically or musically.
