Explore the music in you! Make your appointment today for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra auditions on Feb. 1 at College of the Canyons to launch your musical exploration.
This program offers young musicians an exciting opportunity to become part of a symphony orchestra. The SCVYO has been an integral part of the arts community in the Santa Clarita Valley for 25 years. And the SCVYO’s program builds on the orchestra’s tradition of performing extraordinary selections from the Great Composers.
The in-depth rehearsals — together with instruction on how best to perform with an orchestra — offers a valuable experience to those wishing to discover their potential. SCVYO’s upcoming spring program will include these special features:
* Master classes with well-known professionals;
* Sectionals lead by graduate students of the California Institute of the Arts;
* Workshops in ear training, music theory and music history.
The ultimate goal of the program is to strengthen and expand the musical skills of its participants. It is hoped that each student will reach that “ah-ha” moment—when the hours of practice and passion for music magically come together.
For this spring session, students can audition for one of three ensembles: Symphony of the Canyons, Santa Clarita Youth Orchestra and Prelude Strings. The overall program is lead by long-time Executive Music Director Paul Sherman, Ph.D. He is joined by Derrick Spiva, Jr., Conductor of the SCV Youth Orchestra, and Julissa Bozman, conductor of Prelude Strings. All are professional musicians who have extensive experience in composition, performance and teaching.
“We have a lot of fun in our orchestras and we work very hard to improve,” says Dr. Sherman. “Come join us and learn to play your instrument at the highest level you can attain. During the spring semester we will be traveling to join our sister orchestra in Santa Barbara, and in the summer we have some exciting and fun events planned.”
