Tip of the Week: Preventing and Protecting Yourself and Loved Ones from Drunk Driving and Drunk Drivers
With all the awareness published through social media, and safety advertisements, it seems surprising that Driving Under the Influence (DUI) arrests are still so common. Even more surprising are those who are arrested for DUI. In many cases, they are good common folks that you normally would not expect would make such a poor decision. The fact is, it could happen to ANY of us. When we consume alcoholic beverages, it impairs the mind and causes us to do things or make decisions that we otherwise would not do. Even when ‘buzzed’ we do not think clearly. Additionally, driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime that can have devastation and irreversible consequences, the worst being death of the driver or an innocent bystander. There is only on good thing about the crime of DUI, and that is that it is 100% preventable. Very simply, if you are going to be drinking, DO NOT DRIVE! Designate someone in your party who will NOT BE DRINKING AT ALL as your designated driver. If you do not have a designated driver, call a friend, family member, or a taxi to get a ride home. If you see someone who is about to drive and seems intoxicated, don’t be timid about stepping in and helping them find another way home, even if it is a stranger. You could save a life. In the event that you see someone who is about to drive and you do not feel safe contacting the person, or if you see someone on the road who you suspect is driving intoxicated, call 911 and give the best description of the person and vehicle, as well as location and direction of travel that you can. Some may feel that they do not want to call the police for assistance for fear of ‘getting someone in trouble’. But realistically, what would we all feel worse about? Getting someone arrested and ‘in trouble’ for DUI, or hearing later that someone lost their life as a result of DUI?
Have a wonderful New Year, and please, DRIVE SAFELY.
