Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies worked with Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel to help the occupants of a burning Canyon Country apartment complex Monday.

There were no serious injuries reported, although one family lost their home on the 26800 block of Claudette Street in Canyon Country, where the blaze was reported.

“Any type of residential fire is extremely scary for any of the residents involved,” said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “We’re just glad that no one was injured.”

Fire Department personnel received the report at 2:46 a.m., according to Fire Inspector Tony Akins of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A statement from a Sheriff’s Station deputy who was on the scene described how deputies who responded rushed into the multi-unit apartment complex and help coax a woman outside.

Fire Department personnel were at the scene by 2:51 a.m. to fight the blaze, which had smoke visible from about a mile away, according to Akins.

An on-scene deputy’s statement described the intensity of the blaze and the explosion of a propane tank near or inside the unit.

Firefighters declared the structure fire extinguished by 3:22 a.m., and while three families were initially displaced by the blaze and firefighters’ response, one family appears to have lost their home.

One firefighter was treated for minor burns and then released from the hospital, Akins said.

Two Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies were treated for smoke inhalation, but neither were seriously injured, Dubin said.

No residents appear to have been injured in the fire.

One woman was transported to the hospital from the scene of the fire, however the woman’s injuries were not thought to be related to the fire, according to officials.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department’s Arson and Explosives Details, Dubin said.

On Monday, September 30, 2013, at approximately 2:45am, deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded along with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to the 26800 block of Claudette Street, Canyon Country regarding a multi-unit apartment fire.

When deputies arrived they saw a building fully involved. Deputies evacuated residents as Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. While deputies were assisting residents to leave, they discovered a female who was still inside of her burning condominium. The female was distraught and frantically searching for her sister who had already exited the condo. Deputies Sean Caples and Patrick Ince entered the front door of the burning building in order to get the female out safely. Deputy Caples stated, “I saw the fire. The fire was in the living room and balcony, and a female was trapped in the back area of the condo. We had to run into the apartment and get her outside. About 30 seconds later we could hear what sounded like propane tank explode. It was intense. We are glad everyone made it out ok.”

The fire was eventually extinguished by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and no residents appear to have been severely injured. The two deputies were treated for possible smoke inhalation at a local area hospital. Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries while fighting the blaze.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson/Explosives Detail was notified and responded to the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
