A heroic dog named Charlie saved the lives of her human family members when armed intruders broke into their Los Angeles home.
Charlie and two other family dogs faced down the intruders, resulting in the intruders shooting four bullets, two of which hit Charlie in the legs.
“If Charlie had not taken the bullet, it would have hit one of my children,” one of her owners said.
Charlie’s injuries were severe. Despite the family’s love and gratitude, they could not afford to pay for the care Charlie needed. The surgery was expected to cost more than $3,000. So, the heartbroken family turned Charlie over to the police, who took her to the North Central Shelter, run by Los Angeles Animal Services.
Due to the hard work and compassion of the North Central Shelter Intervention Program, which helps owners locate resources to care for their pets, a crowdfunding campaign was organized. The campaign was highly successful, due in large part to a dog rescue organization called the Bill Foundation.
The Bill Foundation’s website described Charlie’s dilemma and asked for donations, noting that if each person gave only $1, the goal could eventually be met. As of Feb. 27, the campaign had raised nearly double its original goal of $4,000.
Charlie had her surgery Feb. 26. The North Central Shelter Intervention Program had the following to say about Charlie on Facebook:
“Charlie Girl Update! Charlie did great during her surgery. She is spending two nights at ASEC after her surgery and will be going home with her owners tomorrow. We are so sorry she is losing the leg, but countless dogs live regular lives on only three.”
Charlie has returned to her home for a happy reunion with her family. Any unspent donations from the “Charlie” campaign will be used for the next dog in a similar situation.

Wow I would take a bullet for my dogs not let them get shot
The intruders should have been the ones to take a bullet or two.
Had they been armed themselves, this could’ve been avoided and tax dollars saved on jailing these piles
So, what you are saying, nic, is that any citizen is as capable of fighting crime as a law enforcement officer; we don’t need funding for any law enforcement from sheriff to attorney to judge and jury; and any crime should carry the penalty of death?
I don’t think that all crimes should carry the penalty of death, but when someone enters your home armed with the intent to harm you, you should be able to defend yourself. My heart breaks for the dog who was injured and I am glad to hear that she is doing better.

Yes Emily an armed intruder should be shot to death and save both the innocent homeowners and the US the $250,000.00 dollars a year to keep them incarcerated. Nic miller you are spot on
