The Master’s College women’s basketball team’s 2013-14 season improved to 16-3 and 4-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play with a 73-60 victory over Biola Saturday night at Bross Court.
“I thought we competed well for most of the night, but we’re a little “over-amped” offensively which led to an average performance from the field,” commented head coach Dan Waldeck. “Give Biola credit, I thought they played their best game I’ve seen, so I’m thrilled to see us come out with a victory.”
The ninth-ranked Lady Mustangs overcame two early first half deficits before regaining the lead and holding on to it for the rest of the stanza. A spectacular defensive effort coupled with a strong offensive push gave TMC a 29-16 advantage at the break.
At the break, TMC went 5-6 (83%) behind the line, 4-9 (44%) behind the arc, and 10-30 (33%) from the field.
Jacquelyn Marshall (San Clemente, CA) opened the second half with a jumper 43 seconds into play. Six minutes later, Marshall notched TMC’s largest lead (21 points) off a three-pointer, giving the Lady Mustangs a 49-28 advantage.
And while TMC held onto the lead for the remainder of the evening, the Eagles attempted a late-game comeback by cutting the Lady Mustangs’ lead to 6 points off a Chelsea Hill three-pointer with 2:30 left on the clock.
But, TMC held on to the lead as Zoe Scott (Spokane, WA) sunk two free throws, Kelly Burns (Yorba Linda, CA) put up a jumper, and Whitney Best (Snohomish, WA) drained three successful free throws, bringing the final score to 73-60.
Marshall led all competitors with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Nitake followed with 14 points, while Best put up 13 more. As a team, TMC went 22-60 (33%) from the field, 8-19 (42%) behind the arc, and 21-31 (67%) from the charity stripe.
Now, the Lady Mustangs will hit the road Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. game against the 12th-ranked Westmont Warriors- the NAIA’s defending national champions.
“We look forward to a great game against Westmont on Tuesday,” commented Waldeck. “They are very good, play extremely hard, and very well coached. We’ll need to be at our best!”
