[Los Angeles] – The Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the nation’s largest not-for-profit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education, announced today that Lowe’s is contributing $500,000 toward scholarships for the organization.

The contribution will be used to provide financial assistance to undergraduate Hispanic students enrolled in accredited colleges or universities during the 2015-2016 academic year. The scholarships provided will help students cover costs, such as tuition, books, supplies and other essentials for the academic year.

Since 2009, Lowe’s has had a long-standing partnership with HSF supporting the organization’s scholarship efforts. This year’s contribution helps HSF ensure that exceptional Latino students across the country receive the support needed to complete a higher education and become leaders in their professions and communities.

“We are extremely proud to have Lowe’s as a partner,” said Fidel A. Vargas, President & CEO, Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “We are so grateful for their support up to now.  This contribution is a signal statement that the company is more committed than ever to higher education, the Hispanic community, and the future of our country.”

“Lowe’s recognizes that students become tomorrow’s employees, homeowners, and community leaders,” saidJoan Higginbotham, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We are committed to supporting the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, because we know investing in helping students achieve their fullest potential is an investment in the communities we serve.”

About the Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Founded in 1975, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund empowers Latino families with the knowledge and resources to successfully complete a higher education, while providing scholarships and support services to as many exceptional Hispanic American students as possible.  HSF strives to make college education a top priority for every Latino family across the nation, mobilizing our community to proactively advance that goal – each individual, over a lifetime, in every way he/she can. HSF seeks to give its Scholars all the tools they need to do well in their course work, graduate, enter a profession, excel, help lead our nation going forward, and mentor the generations to come.  As the nation’s largest not-for-profit organization supporting Hispanic American higher education, the Fund has awarded over $470 million in scholarships and provides a range of ancillary programs for students, HSF Scholars, Alumni, and parents.  For more information about the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, please visit: HSF.net.

  1. Interesting. There are black scholarship funds too. I suggest if there dare be a white student scholarship fund, it would be considered racist! Anyone donating to that fund would be also called tpracist and there would be people picketing out front of their business. Since white students are in the minority in many universities, I think it’s time for a change in these racist scholarships, and all students regardless of race, gender or even age should be able to apply! Just saying. I’m offended!

    • You’re not offended. You’re just trying to be offensive. Yawn. Catch up, or wither in the past.

    • Ah, yes I am offended. In this economy, there are many more kids needing and deserving of help with costs of higher education. And I do find this racist because white children are now in the minority in many areas.i think race shouldn’t be the criteria for jobs, housing,or scholarships!!period!

    • I agree about the Caucasian students being in the minority. My son was one of three Caucasian students in his 1st grade class last year (in a class of 26). MAYBE there was a time for “minority” favoritism but not anymore! it’s just not fair PERIOD!

    • I have no problem with a white scholarship fund. 0. Do it or stfu.

    • Gerard, I don’t want a white fund. I want the race of the student not the first requirement to qualify for any scholarship. Remember justice is suppose to be blind! Get your head out of your, ah the sand

  2. Jeff Selph says:

It should be based on merit not what race you are. These things are outdated..

  3. Steven Craig says:

Why is it racist to be white

  4. Ann Hustis says:

Might not want to shop there again

  5. Makes ya wanna go hmmmmm???

  6. An education scholarship based on color only advances racism. QUIT using color and sex to advance any single notion and this planet may evolve.

  7. Sounds good to me. Good work Lowes.

  8. as a Hispanic with only a high school education, thank you

  9. Jeff Selph says:

Affirmative action was needed at one time to integrate the workforce. No longer needed just as this is. Earn it!! This country is too PC nowadays

  10. Joe Solomon says:

How about the white middle class scholarship foundation? I never got a free dime. Never took out a loan. I WORKED 38 hours a week a and took 16 units. Try that on. For size and quit crying.
