Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station investigators are seeking information from local residents about the cause of a small fire that broke out at a church in the 28000 block of Morningside Drive in Val Verde Wednesday morning.
“We got the call at 8:40 a.m., and it was a first-alarm fire,” so 10 units were dispatched, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervisor Miguel Ornelas.
“When they got on scene they found smoke in the basement of a church,” Ornelas said.
“They kept the fire to the basement itself,” he said. “They called knockdown at 9:08.”
There were no injuries, he said.
After firefighters found evidence the fire might have been of suspicious origin, “They did call for (Sheriff’s) investigators,” Ornelas said.
“We got the call from the Fire Department at 8:46 a.m. because it was potential arson at that time,” said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Lt. Leo Bauer, who added that two deputies responded.
“They say it’s a church but there’s nothing on the outside of the building that says it’s a church,” he said. “We found that out just by talking to people.”
Bauer said there was no structural damage to the building: “It was minor, like burn marks on the walls. Maybe some scrubbing and some paint would probably take care of it.”
As of post time Wednesday night, Bauer said investigators had found no witnesses who saw how the fire started.
“We only have the Fire Department’s report that some kind of liquid accelerant was used to start the fire around the vents at the basement of the church,” Bauer said.
“But there are no clues as to who, why, what — no graffiti, no message or anything like that,” he said.
Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121.
